WILLIAM D. MASON, OE NEW YORK, N. Y., AND CORNELIUS E. JAooRUS4 AND ROBERT MILLEN, OE NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
To all whom vit-may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM D. MASON, of the city, county, and State of New York, and CORNELIUS H. JAOOEUS and ROBERT MILLEN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms, of which the following is a specifica-- tion:
Figure 1 is a detail vertical longitudinal section of our improved spring bed-bottom taken through the line a' x, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a detail vertical cross-section of the saine taken through the line y y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 1
Our invention has for its object to furnish an improved spring bed-bottom, simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture; and it consists in the construction and coinbination of various parts of the bed-bottom, as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents the feet or posts, B the end boards, and O the side `boards of a bedstead, about the construction of which parts there is nothing new. D are two longitudinal bars or stretchers placed near the Side boards ot' the bedstead. To the ends of the Stretchers D are Secured eyes, E, to receive the hooks formed upon the ends of the coiled wire springs F, the.
hooks formed upon the other ends of said springs being hooked upon hooks or eyes Gr, attached to the end boards of the bedstead, each stretcher being thus entirely independent ofthe other. H are two crossbars placed in such positions as to properly balance the weight upon the bed, and which are notched to the stretchers D to keep them securely in place. Upon the cross-bars H, at suitable distances apart, are placed elastic longitudinal slats I, said slats resting in notches formed to receive them in the cross-bars H. The slats I are kept from getting out of place longitudinallyloy stoppins J attached to them atthe inner Sides of the cross-bars H, so as not to interfere with the proper working of said slats.
If desired, the bed-bottom may be formed by laying elastic cross-slats directly upon the stretchers D; but we prefer the construction trst described, as being more elastic and comfortable, and not liable to sag or bag.
This construction makes the bed bottom especially adaptable for ships, steamboats, and other water-craft, as it takes up very little space vertically.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The stretchers D, suspended at their ends by coiled springs F from the end boards of a bedstead, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the cross-bars H and elastic longitudinal slats I with the stretchers D suspended at their ends by coiled springs F from the end boards of a bedstead, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth. E
WILLIAM D. MASON. CORNELIUS H. JACOBUS. ROBERT MILLEN.
