Specification of Letters Patent.
application filed April 11, 1919. Serial No. 289,224.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RAYMOND P. ALM- STEAI), a citizen of the United States and resident of Rochester, in the county of onroe and Stateof New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels or Spools, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to reels or spools, the present embodiment being designed fora reel for use in holding films for use in moving picture apparatus, an object of this invention being to provide a construction in which a hub having an inner core or hearing is detaohably connected to the flanges, so thatthe hub and flanges may be separated for the purpose of more compactly holding them in the shipping cases or boxes.
To this and other'ends the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of,
parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1
to 4 inclusive of the drawings, 1 indicates the flanges which are 'detachably connected to the hub. The hub in this form consists of an outer member or drum 2 formed of sheet metal {with a spring lip 3 thereon by which the film is secured. concentrically arranged within this outer memberor drum is a bearformed in this instance from sheet metal. .The inner and outer members 2 and 4 are held in spacedrelation by two plates or disks 5, the ends of the core member being extended through the disks and rolled or spun'over the outer faces of the latter as at 6, while the ends of Patented Dec. 14, 1920.

The flanges are also provided with an annular series of slots 9 concentric with the opening 8 and into these slots the tongues 7 on the hub are fitted,-being afterward bent into contact with the outer faces of the flanges so that theflanges are heldv to the hub.
In the embodiment shown in. Figs. 5 to 8, the hub is also detachably engaged with the flanges and comprises an outerdruni 2 secured at its ends by tonguesQ to end plates 5 which are also connected by the bearing member-or core 4 whose ends are flared outwardly at 6 on the outer faces of the plates. The plates 5 are projected at their edges beyond the circumference of the drum 2" and these projecting edges are inthis instance relative relation of the hub and the flanges aboutthe axis of the hub, the tongues will engage the end plates and overhang 'the same in the manner shown in Fig. 6. In order to secure the hub and the flanges against relative turning, a locking device may be employed at each end of the hub,
. this device in this instance consisting of a tongue 12 struck up from the metal of the flanges and adapted to enter one of the notches 10 in order that the locking may be effected.
From the foregoin it will be seen that there has been provi ed a hub =made of an inner core or bearing member and an outer 'drum both being formed of sheet metal and 7 held in properly spaced relation by end plates, this hub being detaehably connected with the flanges. By this construction the flanges maybe packed separately from the hub making it possible to ship the reel in a knock-down condition, thus not only saving in the cost of shipping but also preventing injury to the reel in shipping,
What I- claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination, in a reel or spool, of
a pair of flanges, a hub separate from the ing surrpunding said bearing and also se-- cured at its opposite ends to the end plates,
the flanges having openings opposite the ends of the bearing through which a shaft may be introduced in the bearing.
3. A hub for spools or reels comprising a drum, a core formed separately from and arranged in the drum, and end plates secured to the opposite ends of the drum and the core combined with two flanges separate from the end plates having interlocking connection withthe hub and provided with openings at the ends ofthe core.
4. The combination, in a spool or reel, of two flanges with a hub, one of which interlocks with the other by a relative rotation about the axis of the hub, the hub comprising a drum, a central core formed separately from the drum, and a pair of end plates separate from the flanges to which the (elnds of the drum and the core are secure by a turning movement about the axis of the hub and a latch carried by one of said parts and interlocking with the other when the parts have been turned to a certain position. 6. The combination, in a spool or reel, of a pair of flanges having their inner faces provided with overhanging tongues, with a hub having end plates formed with notches to receive said tongues, the hub and flanges being rotatable to carry the end plates under the tongues, and locking tongues adapted to enter said notches to hold the hub and flanges against relative turning.
7. The combination, in a spool or reel, of a flange having its inner face provided with tongues, with a hub having end plates formed with notches to receive said tongues, the hub and flange beingrelatively rotatable to carry the end plates under the tongues,
and a locking device on the flange adapted to enter one of the notches in the end plate to prevent the relative turning.
- 8. The combination, in a spool or reel, of a pair of flanges, each having its inner face provided with a plurality of tongues, with a hub comprising an outer drum, an inner core and end plates secured to opposite ends of the core and the drum and projecting beyond the drum, the projecting portions of the end plates having notches to receive the tongues, the hub being rotatable relatively to the flanges to cause the end plates to interlock with the tongue.
