Be it known that I, THOMAS A. REILLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Central Falls, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved form of label or the like adapted more particularly to be attached over the open end of a tubular member, and the invention has for its object to provide such a label having a body portion for carrying printed matter 7 or the like and also shaped to cover the open end of a tube or the like, the same having tabs or members on its marginal edge adapted to be bent up and cemented to the side walls of the tube to secure the label in position over the open end thereof.

lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the ap ended claims.

Figure 1 is a view of the outer face of a label as cut from the sheet with its marginal tabs or portions.

Figure 2 is a. perspective view showing the printed inner face of a label and its tabs bent up in position toembrace and be connected to the side walls of the tube.

Figure 3 shows a label applied to each end of a tubular core.

Figure 4 shows a label applied to one end of a tubular core and exposing the printed matter on the inner face of the label as showing through the opposite open end of the tube.

Figure 5 represents a ball or mass of yarn as wound onto a tubular core to one end of which my improved form of label is attached.

It has heretofore been found in practice in app-lying a label to the end of a tubular core such as that upon which yarn or the like is to be wound, to be necessary to first fix a cap or head on, or in, the end of the tube to provide a surface onto which the usual forms of labels may be secured, but by the use of my improved form of label the same may be secured in position over the open end of the tube without the use of such Specification of Letters Patent.

head or cap and so eliminate the expense of forming the cap and also that of applying and fastening the cap to the tube, which runs nto quite an expense where large quantitles of such tubular cores are used.

To obviate this difficulty in a simple and practlcal way I have formed a label with a body portion 10 which is preferably substantlally the size and shape of the tube end to which it is to be attached, and on the perlpheral edge of this body I have formed a plurahty of integral tabs, projections or portions 11 which are adapted to be gummed and bent up from the plane of the body agalnst the side walls of the tube 12 to be securely attached thereto.

. y the use of these tabs or projections it w1ll be seen that a label provided with them, may be readily applied to a tube to cover its open end without the necessity of first applying a head or cap thereto. Then again where the regular cap or head is eliminated my improved label which now takes the place of the cap and covers the end of the tube, may be printed with suitable advertising matter on both sides, and as it is customary to leave one end of the tube open as illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the printed matter on the inside 13 of the label, may be easily read through the opposite open end of the tube, as illustrated in Figure 4.

In the practical use of such tubular cores the yarn 14 is usually wound thereon by the so-called V or diagonal wind which in some cases may be lapped slightly over the ends of the core as at 16 leaving the center printed matter on the label exposed both on the inside and on the outside of the label.

My improved label is extremely simple and practical in construction and elfective in its operation and by its use the cost of labelling and so preparing a tubular core for the winding operation, is reduced to the minimum.

I claim:

A closure member for the open ends of tubes comprising a paper body shaped to fit the tube end and provided with gummed peripheral tabs adapted to be bent up at an angle to the plane of its body to be attached to the side walls of a tube.
