Loose-LEAF LEDG'ER nn mun.
Application filed August 2?. 1921. Serial Ho. 494,502.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES SAMUEL KING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 227-239 Tooley Street, London, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loose-Leaf Ledger's and the like, of which the following is a specification. i l
The object of this invention is to provide an improved means for securing the loose leaves of ledgers and the like of the type in which two or more strapslsecured to the inside of the backof the cover pass through the loose leaves and through followers at the end andbe 'innin of the leaves and into the interior of the front of the cover which is made double; within the front of the cover theyare secured to across bar which isparallel to the hinge and is capable of slight movement towards and away from the hinge.
According to this invention the cross bar has attached to it an actuating strap which passes towards that end of the front which is remote from the hinge and is then bent around a fixedtransverse bar and beneath a second bar parallel to that just mentioned towards the hinge.
My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, Figure l of which is aperspective view of part of a loose leaf ledger'constructed according to the invention, part of the inside of the front cover being cut away to show the mechanism, Figure 2 is a plan of part of such ledger with the front cover open and Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 1.
A, A, A, are three straps which are secured to the inside of the back B of the cover; these pass through loose leaves C and through followers D, D, into the interior of the front E of the cover within wh1ch they are secured to a cross bar F which is parallel to the hinge G and is capable of movement within the front of the cover. lit
,tached to the cross bar F is an actuating strap H which passes towards the edge of the cover E and is bent around and over a cross bar I and threaded beneath a second cross bar J lying parallel to and just above I the bar I and covered with a strip of leather or extra lengthv of strap which is secured to the free end of the strap H to enable the latter more readily to be pulled out from between the bars l and J. The free end of the tongue L may be tucked in through a slit so as to give a neat appearance to the whole.
Thus when the front lfl of the cover has been opened if the back 13 of the cover is grasped by the right hand and the front by the left hand the front can be pulled away from the back. This results in the straps A where they cross the hinge (1 and pass through the leaves i) being siacltened, whereupon any leaf which is threaded in the usual manner on to the straps acting as posts can be detached from the straps and removed from the book. When it is desired to secure the leaves the free end of the strap H or the tongue L can be grasped by the right hand and the outer edge of the front of the cover by the left hand, then by pulling the strap 5; towards the hinge G the cross bar F is drawn away from the hinge and consequently the front of the cover is drawn into close engagement with the front follower D and thus the leaves are held tightly. In order to secure the book in this last position the free end of the strap H may be bent over itself and tucked in beneath a flap K secured to the bar if, so to produce a wedging action by which the strap H is securely locked against movement.
What I claim is 1. In a loose leaf ledger, the combination of a cover including a front, a back and a hinge for connecting the front and the back, a cross bar movable parallel to the hinge and movable within the front of the cover, straps secured at one end to the inside of the back of the cover and at the other end to the cross bar, a transverse bar secured within the front of the cover between the cross bar and the edge of the cover, an actuating strap having one end fixed to the cross bar and bent around the transverse bar and means for securing this strap.
2. In a loose leaf ledger, the combination of a cover including a front, a back and a hinge for connecting the front and the back, a cross bar movable parallel to the hinge and movable within the front of the cover, straps secured at one end to the inside of the back of the cover and at the other end to the cross bar, a transverse bar secured within the front of the cover and between the cross bar and the edge of the cover, a second transverse bar above the first and also secured within the front of the cover and an actuating strap secured to the cross bar, passed beneath the first transverse bar and then between. the two transverse bars.
3. In a loose lea-t ledger, the-combination of a cover including a front, a back and a hinge for connecting the front and the back, a cross bar movable parallel to the hinge and movable within the front of the cover, straps secured at one end to the inside of the back of the cover and at the other end to the cross bar, a transverse bar secured within the front of the cover and between the cross bar and the edge of the cover, a second transverse bar above the first and also secured within the "front of the cover and an actuating strap secured to the cross bar, passed beneath the first transverse bar and then between the two transverse bars and having its free end bent back between the two transverse. bars.
4-. In a loose leaf ledger, the combination of a cover including a front, a back and a hinge for connecting the front and the back a cross bar movable parallel to the hinge and movable within the front of the cover, straps secured at one end to the inside oi": the back of the cover and at the other end to the cross bar a transverse bar secured within the front or the cover and between the cross bar and the edge of the cover, a second transverse bar which is secured to the inside of the front of the cover just above the first transverse bar and provided with a leather covering having a tongue protruding towards the hinge of the cover and an actuating strap secured to the cr0ss bar, passed beneath the first transverse bar and then between the two transverse bars.
5. In a loose leaf ledger, the combination of a cover including a front, a back and a hinge for connecting the front and the back, a cross bar movable parallel to the hinge and movable within the front or the cover, straps secured at one end to the inside of the back of the cover and at the other end to the cross bar, a transverse bar secured within the front of the cover. and between the cross bar and the edge of the cover, a second transverse bar above the first and also secured within the front of the cover and an actuating strap which is secured to the cross barand which is passed beneath the first transverse bar and then between the two transverse bars and has a tongue secured to its free end.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name this 10th day of August, 1921.
J AMES SAMUEL KING.
