Description

J. P. SUYTCLIFFE.
CONTAINER. APPLICATION FILED APH.9, I92I.
Patented oet. 10,1922.
INVENTOR Patented Oct. 10, 1922.
STATES TET CONTAINER.
Application filed April 9,
To all whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that l, JOHN l).` SU'rcLirrE, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers, and particularly to pails for garbage and the like, and one of the principal objects is to provide a device or" this nature in which the cover is normally automatically locked to the container.
Another obj ectV is to provide the can with two bails which may be so manipulated as to empty the container of its contents without having to touch the can proper.
Another object is to mount the cover so that it will be permanently attached to the can and may be readily raised and moved over the side thereof.
Another object is to normally lock the principal bail in vertical position so as to prevent tipping of the can when the same is being carried.
lVith these and other objects in view which will be more apparent as the speciiication proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of which are hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in the appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved container.
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same with the parts in normal closed position.
Figure 3 is a side elevation of the device in emptying position.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in all views.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 10 represents the body and 11 the cover of a container, which, in the present instance, is shown in the form of a garbage pail. The cover 11 is provided centrally with a handle 12, the ends of which are projected across the top and extend beyond the edges thereof as ears 13. Each ear 13 is provided with an aperture 14, and through these ears the legs 15 of the principal bail 16 extend downwardly.
Secured to each side of the body 10 is a4 vertically disposed strap or strip of sheet 1921. Serial y No. 459,908.
metal 16 which is bent into a U shape at its lower end and provided with an aperture for receiving thebent lower end oit' the respective leg 15 of the principal bail, said leg being retained in .seated position by the outer portion of the U-shaped lower end of the strap 16. The upper end of each strap 16 is cut and bent outwardly into two fingers 17 and 18. The rear finger 18 is curved and forms a stop for the bail 16 to prevent rearward movement of the bail when the cover is closed and to permit such rearward movement when the cover is raised.
It is to be noted that the legs 15 of thc principal bail pass downwardly through the apertures 14 and through the edge flanges 19 of the cover 11, and that they are curved inwardly at 20. From this construction, it will be obvious that when the cover is down the legs 15 will be drawn inwardly in front of fingers 18 and that the curved portions 20 will hold the cover down. Also, when the cover is raised, portions 2O will hold the cover raised and the action against these parts will spread the legs 15 so that they may be readily sprung over the ngers 18 to move the cover down at the rear of the can.
The front fingers 17 are provided with apertures which form bearings for an auxiliary bail 21, the end portions of which form loops 22 that prevent forward movement of the legs 15 of the principal bail from their vertical position.
Then it is desired to empty the can, the operator grasps the auxiliary handle 21. The cover 11 is then raised and bail 16 is moved rearwardly. The can is then raised at its lower end by bail 16 or lowered at its upper end by bail 21 to the position shown in Figure 3, in which position the contents is readily discharged from the container.
lVhile I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details may be varied without in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of my invention limited only by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is 1. A container comprising a body portion,
a main bail pivotally connected to said body portion, and an auxiliary'bail pivotally secured to said body portion and forming a stop for limiting movement of said main 5 bail in one direction.
2. A container comprising a body ortion, a main bail pivotally connected to said body portion below its center, and an auxiliary bail pivotally secured to. said body portion above its center and forming a stop lor said main bail.
3. A container comprising a body, a bail pivotally connected to said body and formed with inwardly bent portions above said body, and a cover having a plurality of bearings at each side whereby said cover is slidably mounted on said bail and co-active' signature. Y i 1 Y JOHN P. SUTCLIFFE.
