NicEoLAs' EIATT, OE PLUM HOLLOW, IOWA.
` IMPROVEMENT IN EYELETS FOR HARNESS-TRACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,096, dated October 28, 1873; application filed September 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS HIATT, Of Plum Hollow, in the county of Fremont and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Tugs and Attachment toWhiffletrees; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact decompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specication. v
The nature of my invention consists in the into the end of a tug or trace, forming the eye to be attached to the whifletree, and a clip on the end of the tug, as will be hereinafter more` fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in theart to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and Operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the rear end of a tug or trace with my improvement inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the casting inserted in the tug.
A represents the end of a tug or trace, made of leather in any of the known and usual ways. Within this trace is inserted a casting consisting of a bar, B,of any desired dimensions', and provided with an eye, C, projecting on both sides of the bar, and with a head or clip, D, at
the end. Around each end of the eye C is an outward-projecting flange, @,forminga groove around the eye on each side of the bar B, so that when the leather is put on it will iit or be pressed in said grooves', and thus form a good nish. The head or clip D protects the end of the trace, as shown; This casting thus constrnoted is riveted to the leather by one or more rivets, b, according to the size of theloasting, andboth edges of the leather beingsewed the casting is held rmly in its place. The eye C may be made in any desired shape; but I prefer the form shown in the drawing, the rear end being made larger than the front end'. G represents the usual" flanged and headed pin fastened in the endv of the whiflie'tree, and on which the trace is fastened in the usual manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bar B, provided with the eye C and head or clip D, and secured within the end of a tug or trace, A, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 18th day of March, 1873.
l NICHOLAS IllATT.
