Patented May 22, 1923. i
PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY (.JHRISTENSEN AND EDMOND L. BRUNSWICK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LAMP. l
` Application led January 25, 1922. Serial No. 531,541.
l To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, HARRY CHRISTENSEN and EDMOND L. BRUNSWICK, citizens of the United States, and residents of Chicago, .in the county of Cook and State of Ill1no1s, have invented a certain new and -useful 1mprovement in Lamps, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, formlng a part-of this specification.
' This invention relates to lamps and particularly to table or boudoir lamps.
The object of theinvention is to providev in a lamp of this vcharacter a standard which is ornamental and which is adapted to form a support or frame for a picture or photograph, or similar device.
In thedrawings which represent applicants invention,
yFigure 1 is a side elevation of applicants invention, showing the lamp shade partly broken away;
Figure 2 is a sectional view ony the line 2-2 of Figure l;
Figure 3 is-a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings in which like reference characters indicate similar desired manner a shade 13.
parts in the several views, 10 indicates the base of the lam to which is secured the standard generally ported at the top of the standard is a lamp socket 12, about which is su ported in any t o invention is claimed for the lamp socket, or the shade, and they may be of any desired character.
The salient feature of the invention is the provision in the standard of a frame within which a picture or photograph may be inserted, and a side removable from said frame to facilitate the insertion of the photograph therein. The base and standard are preferably formed of castings or stampings of any suitable metal.
The standard l1 is formed of a part 14, which is integral with the base portion 10, anda similar part 15, which is removable Vfrom 'the base portion and the portion 14.
The removable side portion 15 is formed with a downwardly extending substantially semi-cylindrical lug 16 adapted to be received within the opening 17 at the top of designated as 11. Sup,
the base portion. The outer edges of substantially the upper half of the standard are provided with the ornamental ridges 18. The ridges 18 are .formed integral with the p0rtion 14 of the standard, and are recessed as indicated at 19 (Fig. 4) to form flanges with which the edge of the upper half of the side portion 15 engages.
The portion 14 is cut away centrally thereof to provide an opening 20, which in the present embodiment is shown as oval. The recess within the portion 14 is adapted to receive a protecting glass 21, behind which may be arranged a picture or photograph22.
The side portion 15 may be formed as an ornamental panel or if preferred may be centrally out away so as'to rovide a second frame on the opposite si e o-f the lamp standard. The parts 14 and 15 at their upper extremities thereof are each formed with a semi-circular collar, which, when the parts are in position, together form a complete annulus 23. A ring 24 may be provided surrounding the annulus 23 to maintain the parts ofthe standard in their operativev position. l
As the lug 16 at the lower end of the member 15 is engaged within the opening atthe top of the base 10, upward movement of the part 15 is prevented by the ornamental ridges 18, and the upper ends of the parts 14 and 15 are maintained in engagement by means of the ring 24, it will be noted that the side portion 15 is securely held in engagement with the frame portion 14.
The lamp socket is provided with a downwardly extending portion 25 which may be either separable from or integral with the `socket member 12. The member 25 is prefsocket will still be rigidly supported.
The conducto-rs leading in to the lamp socket are indicated at 26, and preferablyl will extend through an opening 27 in the base member 10, although if preferred they may bel caused to extend downwardly through an opening in the supporting surface upon which the base member rests.
ln order that the protecting glass 21 and photograph 22 may be maintained in position when the removable side member 15 is in place, a spiral or any preferred type of coil spring 28 is provided, one end of which will be caused to engage the-'side member l5, pret'- er-ably substantially centrally thereof, and the other end will be caused to engage the photograph. llt preferred, instead of the spiral spring, spacing members ot cork or any other desired material may be placed between the side member l5 and the photograph, in order that the photograph may be maintained in its proper position.
ln further explanation, it may be'stated that the standard 11 is divided centrally along the line 29 in substantially two equal halves with the exception that the ornamental ridges are entirely integral with the frame portion 14: of the standard.
While in the drawings and the above description but a single form of applicants invention is disclosed, it is to be understood that many modiications are contemplated. The standard may be of varying forms, and different means may be provided for maintaining the removable side in position. lt is therefore to be understood that the invention is to be limited merely by the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim is new' and desire to secure by Letters Patent orv the United States is:
l. In a support, a base, a hollow standard supported byv said base and having an opening in one side thereof, the portion of said standard about said opening being adapted 'to support a picture or similar device opposite sald opening, and a side of said standard opposite said opening removable from said standard, the sides of said standard being arranged when in operative positions with their edges in interengaging relation. 2. ln a support, a base, a flattened hol- 10W standard supported thereon consisting of two parts arranged with their edges in engagement each with the other, one of said partshaving an opening therein, the portion of said part about said opening being adapted to form a frame and support for a picture or similar device, the other of said parts being removable from said one of said parts to facilitate the insertion of a picture or similar device within said standard.
3. In a support, a base, a flattened hollow standard comprising two substantially like parts arranged with their edges in engagement each with the other, said base and one of said parts consisting of an integral portion of cast or stamped metal, the other one of'said parts being separable from first mentioned one of said parts, one of said neaaeoe parts being provided with an opening, the
-portion of said part about said opening being arranged to form a. frame and support tor a picture or similar device, and means for securing said parts together.
4. ln a support, al base, a flattened hollow standard comprising two parts arranged with their edgesin engagement, said bam and one of said parts consisting of an integral casting or stamping of metal, the other of said parts being separable from said first mentioned one of said parts,"said one of said parts having a symmetrical opening formed the-rein, the portion of said art about said opening being arranged to orm a frame and support for a picture or similar device, and means for securing said parts together. v

6. n a support, a base, a flattened hollow standard having generally arallel'sides'and consisting of two substantially equal parts, said base and one of said parts consisting of an integral portion of cast or stamped metal, the other one or said parts being sep.-
arable from said first mentioned one of said parts, said rst mentioned one of said parts having a symmetrical openin formed therein, the portion of said parta ut said opening bem arranged to form a frame and support or a picture or similar device, and means for securing said parts together. l
7. ln combination, a. base, a iattened hollow' standard supported thereonconsisting of two substantially flat similar parts arranged with their edges together, oneo' said parts having an opening therein, the portion of said part about said opening be'- ing adapted to form a'frame and support for a. picture or similar device, the other of said parts being removable from said one of said parts to facilitatethe insertion of-ffa picture or similar device Within'said standizo ard, and a lamp socket fixed to said standard at the end remote from said base.
8.- In combination, a base, a attened hollow standard comprising two similar interengagin parts supported on said base, said base an one of said parts consisting or an integral casting 'or stamping [of metal, the
other of said ,parts being separable from said rst-mentioned one of said parts, one
