To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEO J. Dory, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Safety Film Reels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in safety film reels.

My invention provides a novel hoop which is adapted to be ailixed releasably to a film reel so as to completely cover the outer side of a film held on the reel and which will protect the film from catching fire.

The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.

For covering and-protecting the film car- 60 --ried by the drum, when the film is not in use, I provide a hoop which is expansible and contractible so as to be slipped on and off the heads 1, and which is composed, preferably of two members 10 and 11 which 65 have one set of ends overlapping, as shown in Flg. 4, said set of ends being hinged together by a link 12, the ends of which are respectively pivoted to two cleats 13 respectively secured to the outer sides of the members 10 and 11. By connecting the members 10 and 11 with the link 12, pivoted thereto at a substantial distance from the adjacent ends of said members, such ends will be swung Widely apart in the open position of the hook, thereby enabling the reel to be inserted therein more readily than would be the case if an ordinary pintle hinge connection were provided.

The other set of ends of the members 10 and 11 are adapted, when the hoop is in the closed position shown in Fig. 3, to overlap, laid overlapping ends being releasably held in the closed position by means of'a locking cam lever 14, which is ivoted to one end of a link 15, the other en of which is pivoted to a cleat 16 attached to the outer side of the member 11. lhe locking hook 14 is adapted for releasable engagement with one end of a link 17, the other end of which is pivoted to a cleat 18 attached to the outer side of the member 10.

Each member 10 and 11 is provided at opposite side edges with inwardly extending flanges 19, adapted to respectively embrace 9 the outer sides of the heads 1.

Each of the members 10 and 11 is preferably provided at its opposite edges with two grooves 20 adapted to respectively receive the outer edges of the heads 1, whereby M9 the heads are held apart.

In the operation of my invention, after the film has been placed on the hub 2, the hoop members 10 and 11 are fitted on the edges of the heads 1, so that the free ends of said members overlap, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, after which the locking lever 14's is hooked through the link 17 and then turned to the locking position, shown in Figs. 1 and 3, thereby drawing together and holding the members 10 and 11 firmly on the drum and completely covering the outer lltl lie

The members 10 and 11 are also of fire protective material, such as sheet'steel. /Vhen fitted on the heads 1, the members 10 and 11 form therewith a tight fireproof covering for the film. The holes 8 in the heads are of the same size as the opening 2 of the axle 7. The ends of the latter abutting against the heads prevents the entrance in to the hub 2, at the outer side of the axle 7 of any sparks or flames. By employing the two links 15 and 17, a cam lever 14 may be utilized for fastening together the free ends. of the members 10 and 11. By

the use of a cam lover, the members 10 and 11 are drawn forcibly to ether in the locking operation and are 1151a securely locked in the closed position.

To use the film, it is but necessary to release the locking lever let from the link 17, after which the members 10 and 11 may be swung to the open position and removed eat en may be made without departing from th spirit of my invention.

What I claim is:

A safety film reel cover comprising two members having means for embracing the edges of'the heads of a film reel and having one set of ends which overlap each other hinged together, the other set of ends being adapted to overlap each other in the closed position, said members Where they overlap having their inner surfaces flush with each other, and means'for releasably locking together the free ends of said members, substantially as set forth.
