GARBAGE AND SEWAGE INGIN151RA'fllil'G- APPARATUS.
Application filed November 6, 1920. Serial No. 422,290.
T 0 all to 710m it may concern Be it known that I. JASPER C. CURRY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing Pineville. in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage and Sewage Incinerating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved gar-.. ba ge and sewage incinerating apparatus and its object to provide a structure of this nature in which the material to be disposed of is first heated in a closed retort to drive off all moisture and the residue is thereafter burned in the same retort in the presence of air.
The figure shown in the accompanying drawing is a view partly in longitudinal sect-ion and partly in elevation of a structure constructed in accordance with the in vention.
Referring to the drawing 5 designates a furnace provided with a door at 6 through which access may be had to the burner indicated at 7. A flue 8 is provided for the escape of the products of combustion. Liquid fuel is supplied to the burner 7 through a fuel supply pipe 8 which leads from a tank 9. This fuel supply pipe includes a controlling valve 10. A bowl 11 provided with a removable lining 12 depends into the furnace 5 and is provided with a screw cap 13 by which a tight closure of the bowl is effected. run air supply pipe 1 having a controlling valve 15 in its length enters the bowl at 16. An exhaust pipe 17 leads from the bowl and includes a valve 18 in its length. A. branch 19 leads from the pipe 17 at a point between the valve 18 and the bowl and is continued at 20 to form a condenser 20 that is located in a tank 21 adapted to receive water or other cooling medium.
In operation the valve 15 is closed, valve 19" of branch 19 is opened and the valve 18 is closed. The burner 7 is then lighted to heat the bowl l1 and the contents thereof it being understood that the top of the bowl is closed by the cap 13. Thus the bowl forms. in effect, a closed retort, so that destructive distillation of the contents of the bowl takes place. The released steam and gases pass through the pipes 17 and 19 to and through the condenser coil 20 and are there condensed and, if desired, are recovered at 20.
After all moisture has been driven. off of the material to be incinerated, valve 19 is closed valve 18 is opened. and valve 15 is opened to admit air. preferably under pressure, to the interior of the bowl 11. Thus the remaining contents of the bowl are incinerated and charred. after which the lining 12 may be removed by expanding tongs, not shown, to dump the remaining ash therefrom and to permit the refilling of the same.
Thus it will be seen that simple and efticient means are provided for effectively disposing of sewage and garbage, without odor and in a highly efiicient manner.
The invention is not limited to the precise construction set forth but includes within its purview whatever changes fairly come within either the termsor the spirit of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A. device of the character described comprising a heating element, a bowl to be heated thereby, an air-tight closure for said bowl, a discharge leading from the bowl and having a controlling valve therein, a branch pipe leading from the discharge pipe between the valve and the bowl, a condensing coil to which the branch pipe leads a bodily removable lining for said bowl constituting a receptacle and means for supplying air to the interior of said bowl and receptacle above the top of said receptacle.
2. A device of the character described comprising a furnace, a bowl depending thereinto and permanently associated therewith, a burner for heating said bowl, a removable air-tight closure for said bowl, an air pipe leading to said bowl, a. controlling valve in the air pipe, a discharge pipe lead in g from the bowl, a controlling valve in the dischar e pipe, a branch pipe leading from the discharge pipe between the valve and the bowl a vertically disposed condensing coil to the top of which the branch pipe leads, said branch pipe having a controlling valve disposed in its length and a cooling water receptacle in which said coil is disposed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
