H. SHELMON BoTTLE'c osURE':
Filed July 1a, 1920 ATTORNEY WITNESF:
Patented Aug. 28, 1923.
NITE risen HENRY SHELMON, OF VONTRESS, TEXAS.
BOTTLE Application filed July 18,
T 0 (Mao/ m 2'2, m my concern Be it known that I, HENRY SHELMON, a citize of the United States, residing at Vontress, in the county of Haskell and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottle Closures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bottle closures and has for an object the provision of a closure which may be easily removed from the bottle or applied thereto, to tightly close the bottle mouth.
Another object is the provision of a novel form of closure which is forced into engagement with a bottle mouth by means of a spring, so that a tight closure or seal is effected.
l/Vith the above and other objects in view, the invention includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings:
Figure l is a fragmentary elevation of the neck of a bottle with the seal applied thereto, the latter being shown in section.
Figure 2 is an elevation of the seal removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view similar to Figure 1 but showing the seal removed from the bottle.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates the neck of a bottle which is provided with spaced annular flanges 11, the upper flange being formed in two sections which are spaced apart as shown at 12 the ends of one section being provided with 7 vertical ribs 13 which extend downwardly from the upper edge of the lower flange so as to form diametrically opposite channels 15 whose entrances are through the spaces 12.
CLOSURE.
1920. Serial No. 396,684.
The closure comprises a cap 16 having diametrically located legs 17 whose extremities are provided with inwardly extending lugs 18, the latter being designed to operate in the grooves 15 after passage through the space 12. Positioned within the cap 16 is a disk 19 which is preferably formed of cork and interposed between this disk and the inner end of the wall of the cap is a spring 20 which acts to urge the disk toward the open end of the cap.
In applying the closure, the inserted within the grooves 15 by means of the interrupted portions 12 of the flanges, this action compressing the spring 20 so that lugs 18 are 7 i the disk 19 will fit tightly upon the mouth of the bottle." The cap is then rotated-so that accidental disengagement will be prevented. Y
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor Y details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is z- The combination with a bottle, of a 010- sure comprising'a cap, diametrically opposite-1y arranged legs extending downwardly from said cap, inwardly extending lugs formed on said legs, an annular flange surrounding the bottle neck, a sectional flange surro-undingthe neck, above the annular flange, vertical ribs connecting the'fianges and extending fromone end of each of the sectional'fianges so as to form diametrically opposite channels for receiving the inwardly extending lugs, said lugs being adapted to en age the adjacent rib when the cap is in locked position and spring means arranged in the top of the cap as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
, HENRY SHELMON.
