h JOHAN mrmme JOHNSON, or SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH.
EDUCATIONAL APPLIANCE;
Application filed August 31,- 1922. Serial No. 585,450.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JoHAN HILDING JOHN- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented a new and useful Educational Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to educational appliances, and the object thereof is to pro- 1 vide a device of this character constructed for use of children in kindergartens. or the lower grades to teach them to set up words,
binatio'n and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. I
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the appliance embodying this invention con 'structed for educational purposes.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section, and
Fig. 4: is a detail face view of one of the spacing plates.
In the embodiment illustrated, the appliance 1 which'constitutes' this invention com-- prises a supporting frame, composed of end members 2 and 3 connected by side bars 4 and 5 and a rod 6 which latter 0 erates'as a retainer for spacing plates hereinafter to mounted wheel members having lndicla on be described.
A plate 7 connects the tops of the end members 2 and 3, being preferably arranged to one side of. the vertical center .thereof as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 and which is provided with a plurality of longitudinally alined openings 8 which may be of any desired configuration, being here shown round and which are designed to expose indicia located beneath the plate. The apertures 81 in the plate 7 are designed to cooperate with a plurality of rotatably mounted disk-like plates or wheels 10 an openin 8 being provided for each wheel so that indicia carried on the periphery of the wheel may be exposed through .the opening.
These wheels or disks 10 may be composed of any suitable material and of any desiredsize according to the size of the appliance to be constructed and are strung on a rod 11 which extends centrally through these disks and has its opposed ends mounted in the end members 2 and 3 of the frame. Arranged between the disks are spacing plates 12which preferably conform in shape and size to the disks and are provided with radially extending apertured ears 13 through which the cross rod 6 passes, and holds the plates against turning. These plates 12 operate as spacers to prevent contact of the adjacent disks with each other so that when 'one disk is turned, the others will not be affected and will remain stationary.
These disks 10 are provided on their peripheries with indicia which is here shown in the form of letters of the alphabet and figures, any desired number of which may be employed, each wheel preferably containing every letter in the alphabet arranged in proper succession so that the disk may be turned to expose through its cooperating aperture in plate 7 any desired letter or number enabling the manipulator to set up words or phrases which are visible through the apertures 8 in plate 7 It is of course understood that this appliance, while here shown constructed foruse as an educational device. may be used as an advertising device by varying the character of the indicia on the wheels which may be used as a calendar or for many other purposes.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described, a supporting frame, a plurality of rotatably fecting the others, said plates having apertured ears extending beyond the perimeters of the rotatable members, and a rod extending through 'said ears to hold said plates against turning.
2. In a device of the class described, a
Y ears extending rotatable members,
contactin therewith to frictionally hold said mem rs in adjusted position. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed 15 my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHAN HILDING JOHNSON. Witnesses:
