Gas Cigar-Lighters.

- ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY KRUGER, or NEW YORK, N.
iMPROVEMENT IN GAS CIGAR-LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,409, dated February 10, 1874; application filed January 9, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY KRI'iGER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gas ()igarLighters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in. which drawing- Figure 1 represents a sectional front view of my cigar-lighter when the same is in its position of rest. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same when it is held up in the position for lighting a cigar. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. I
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a loose disk in a gas-chamber, which is sup plied with gas through a flexiblepipe, and which communicates with the burner through a channel emanating from its bottom part, in such a manner that when the gas-chamber is suspended in a vertical position, or in its position of rest, the loose disk bears on the mouth of the channel leading to the burner, allowing for the passage of just sufficient gas to feed a very small flame; but, if the gas-chamber is turned out of its position of rest, the loose disk uncovers the mouth of the channel leading to the burner, and a bright flame is 'produced. A set-screw, which extends through the side of the gas-chamber, and bears on the loose disk, serves to prevent said disk from closing entirely the mouth of the channel leading to the burner.
In the drawing, the letter A designates a gas-chamber, which is, by preference, made circular, and which connects, by a pipe, a, and a flexible tube, 1), with the gas-supply pipe. From that part of the gas-chamber which is opposite to the pipe a extends a handle, B, and said chamber communicates, by means of a channel, 0, with the'gas-burner G. The mouth of the channel 0 isover the handle B, and opposite to the pipe a. In the interior-of the chamber A is placed a disk, D, the diameter of which is somewhat smaller than that of the chamber, and, if the chamber is permitted to follow its inherent gravity, said disk rests upon the mouth of the channel 0, so that little or no gas is permitted to flow to the burner G. In order to prevent the disk from closing entirely the mouth of said channel, a set-screw, (l, is applied, which extends through the side of the gas-chamber, and retains the same at a slightly-elevated position, Fig. 3, so that when the gas-chamber occupies its position of rest a quantity of gas is admitted to the burner sufficient to feed a small flame.
If it is desired to light a cigar, the chamber A is brought in an inclined position, as shown in Fig. 2, and thereby the disk D is caused to uncover the mouth of the channel 0, allowing sufficient gas for a large flame, and as the flame increases the cigar can be readily and conveniently lighted.
The disk D is perforated in its center with a hole, 0, embracing freely a pin f, which passes through the center of the gas-chamber, and serves to retain the cover or head of said gas- .chamber in position.
By this arrangement, a simple cigar-lighter can be produced, which is not liable to get out of order, and which uses the gas with the greatest possible economy. 1
I am aware that a cigar-lighter has been provided with a sliding gravitating-valve, arranged in an inclined chamber, and operating in such a manner that when the device is at a state of rest, or not in use, the jet of gas will be small, and when the handle is turned in an upward direction the valve will drop from the opening leading into the burner, to permit an increased quantity of gas to pass to the burner. This construction possesses several disadvantages, as the valve can only be moved to ad mit a full supply of gas to the burner by turn ing the handle of the device in a single vertical direction, while in my invention, owing to the employment of a rolling circular valve or disk, the full amount of gas is admitted to the burner by moving the handle of the device in either a forward or backward direction. I therefore do not desire broadly to claim a gravirating-valve in a cigar-lighter; but
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the burner-handle B and service-pipe a b, the circular rolling valve or disk I), arranged within a circular casing,
2 law-109 A, to adapt it to admit it full supply of gas to passes through an enlarged opening, a, made the burner by either aforward or a backward in the valve, as herein shown and described. movement of the handle as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the handle B, serv- HENRY KRUGER" ice-pipe a b, and the burner G, the circular roll- \Vitnesscs: ing valve D arranged within a circular casing, W. HAUFF, and hung upon a central axis-pin, f, which E. F. KASTENHUBER.
