BRAKE BAND.
Application tiled September 9, 1922. Serial No. 587,108.
l0 use in connection with the service brakes of motor vehicles, and seeks, as one of its principal objects1 to provide a brake band-Whach will eliminate overheating and \vhe" rn"wear will be reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the inventionl is 'to provide a band which will dispense with the iusual band lininfr and wherein; in lieu of such ,a linin a urality of gripping rollers will be empioye.
And the invention has as a' still further object to provide a device wherein the rollers may be easily kept lubricated.
Other and incidental objects will appear hereinafter.

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, it will be `seen that iy improved brake band is formed of companion upper and lower segmental sections A and ll, each comprising a pair of spaced arcuate side bars 10. Intel-posed between said side bars at the rear ends of the sections is a coupling block ll to which the bans are pivotally connected by pins l2 and rising from said block at its outer sido is a sleeve 13. The block 11 serves. of course, to space apart the side bars of each pair at their rear ends and interposed between the forward ends o f said pairs of bars arespacing blocks 14 and 15 respectively. 'Thi-,e blocks are secured in position by rivets or other suitable fastening devices 16 extending through the side bars 11nd rigidly connecting the bars of each pair at suitably spaced plants are cross pins 1T. Rising from the block l1 are spaced ears 1S and pivoted at one cud between said ears is an upstanding operating lever 19. Rising from the block 15 is a lug 20 and pivotally connected to said lever is a toggle .rod or link 21 extending freely through said lug. Threaded upon the rod .to co-.ict with the lug is a nut 22 and sur rounding the rod is a spring :23 acting to Spread the forward ends of the sections of the band, the nut 22 being adjustable for tensioning said spring.
Lying between the side bars of thc sections is a plurality of gripping rollers 24 provided at their ends, as shown in Figure .3, with trunnions 25 journaled through the' bars. These rollers are arranged relatively close together Aand project at the inner edfre of the side barsr the eripheral surfaces o? the rollers being pre erably knurled. Formed iu the outer edges of the side bars of the section A are, as particularly shown in Figures 2 and 5. longitudinally directed lubricant`channels :Z6 Vand leading from said channels through said bars to the trunnions of eachof the rollers upon said section are passa es 2T. Overlying the outer edges of the si( e bars of both of the sections and B are cover plates 28, the plate upon the section A closing the channels 26 lthroughout the major p ortion ot' their length. As shown in Figure 1, the plates 2S are pr vided at spaced points with depending lugs 25) lying flat against the outer faces of the side bars of the sections and extending through said lugs are screws 30 threaded iuto the side bars t'or detachably connecting the cover plates thereto` the plates serving to house the rollers 24.
