ANTONIO FELICE ACCETTA, OF WEST DOVER/0310.
BURGLARROOF ATTACHMENT FOR LOCKS.
.Application filed September 30, 192.2. Serial N10. 591,612.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ANTONIO Fanion AooErrA, citizen of the United States, residing at West Dover, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Burglarproof Attachment for Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to locking devices for doors, and has for its object the provision of a peculiarly constructed lock and attachment therefor designed to act as an auxiliary securing means and adapted particularlyy for use in holding a door securely, as for instance when the occupants of a dwelling or other building intend to be absent for a considerable time.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a device of this character, which includes a specially constructed lock having a bolt of peculiar formation which may be used in the ordinary manner and under the usual circumstances, but which is also capable of having the securing device engaged therewith, one portion of the securing device having penetrating engagement with the door jamb, and another portion having operative connection with the bolt, it being intended that the attachment be removed except when in actual use.
An additional object is the provision of a combined locking and securing device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture and installation, eiiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
To the attainment of the foregoing, the invention consists in the details of construction and arrangement to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and claimed, though it is to be understood that the form shown is merely an exemplification, as I reserve the right to make whatever changes will not depart from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a fragment of a door and its jamb showing my device applied thereto,v the lock mechanism being illustrated by dotted lines;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of lFig. 1;
Figure 3 is an elevation of the inside of one portion ofthe lock casing and showing the knob controlled latch bar; v y
Figure 4: is an elevation looking at the inside of the removable plate of the lock casing, the housing for the bolt mechanism being in section;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the securing device attachment ;V
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the door carried retaining member for the securing device;
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the key.
Referring more particularly to the draw-v The face plateis let'into the edge of theY door while the casing is recessed thereinto, the face plate being provided with holes for lthe passage of suitable securing screws 14 which pass into the door.
Slidably mounted within the upper portion of the casing 11 is a latch bolt 15, operating through the usual opening 16 in the face plate to cooperate with a socket 17 in the jamb. The latch bolt is formed with a slot 18 engaging upon a stationary guide 19 within the casing, and abutting against this guide is'one end of a coil spring 2() which has its other end engaged upon a lug 21 projecting inwardly of the slot from one end thereof, the spring operating to press the latch boltl outwardly into engagement` within the socket 17. The inner end of the latch bolt is guidably received within a U- shaped guide. 22 secured upon the inside of the casing, and the inner extremity is formed with'an elongated slot 23 within which operates a pin 24 carried by an arm 25 on a curved lever 26, which is concentrically disposed with respect to a sleeve 27, which has reduce-d ends rotatably engaged within openings 28 in the wall of the casing and in the cover 12 thereof. This sleeve 17 is formed with the usual rectangular bore 29 within which is engaged a shank 30 which carries knobs' 31 in the ordinary vmanner.
The sleeve 27 carries an arm 32 engageable Y.
with the arm 25 when the knob is turned, and which operates to retract the latch bolt 15 to permit opening of the door.'
Slidably mounted within the casing below the latch bolt 15, is a locking bolt 33 designed to be projected into a keeper socket 34 in the door 'jamb B. This bolt has its outermost vend portion mounted within a l.)-
shaped guide 35, and has its inner portion 36 reduced and operating Within a U-shaped guide 37, both of the guides 35 and 37 being carried by the cover plate 12 Voi.: the lock casing. Intermediate its ends the reduced portion 36 is formed With a lug 38, While the juncture of the reduced portion with the outermost end portion defines a shoulder 39. The Wider end portion of this bolt is formed at opposite edges with notches 40, which register, at times, With a slot 41 in the cover plate 12, for a purpose to be described. The upper edge of the reduced portion 36 of the bolt is formed with a series of notches 2, with which cooperates a tongue 43 formed on a leaf-spring 44, which has one end secured to the cover plate 12. This spring is of peculiar formation and is bent upon itselic intermediate its ends, as shown at 45, to define a projecting portion 46 which extends below the lower edge of the reduced portion 36 ot the bolt. The tree end of the spring is coiled upon itself, as indicated at 47, and bears against the underside of the intermediate portion oi the spring above the lock bolt. The numeral 48 represents a frame like housing carried by the cover plate 12 and extending over the spring structure, for the purpose ot retaining the same in position and enclosing a portion of the lock mechanism.
rlhe cover plate is formed with a key-hole 49 of peculiar shape which may be exactly as illustrated, or which may vary, if desired. Located betWeen the cover plate 12 and trame member 48 is a sleeve 50 having one end 'formed With a flange 51 bearing eXteriorly upon the Ycover plate 12, and formed at its other end with a trunnion pivoted Within a hole in the housing frame. The sleeve is here illustrated as formed internally with intersecting ribs 52, though the arrangement thereof would naturally vary depending upon the exact type of key intended to be used in connect-ion With the lock.
The specific key employed in connection with the lock mechanism illustrated includes a hollow cylindrical shank provided at one end with a finger grip 54 and having its other end 'formed with slots 55 for the accommodation of the ribs 52. V'lihis key is illustrated as carrying bit 56 bifureated at 57 tor the accommodation of a baarle lug 58 at the edge of the keyhole, the bit being furthermore provided at opposite sides of the bifurcation with slots 59, for the. accommodation of an arcuate gua-rd or balile 60 mounted upon the inside of the housing frame 48. i
In connection lwith the lock mechanism above described, I employ a securing device shown in'detai-l -in Figure 5, and including an elongated'metallic strip 61 which merges into a hook 62,vvhieh has a pointed end 63 designed to be driven into the door jamb', as
shown in Figure 1. Extending transversely through the door above the lock casiniT therein is a bolt 64, having one end tireaued and carrying a nut 65, and having its other end formed with an eye 66 through which the hook is passed. Carried by the plate or strip 61 is a retaining member 67 of platelike formation designed to be inserted through the slot 41, formed with an opening 66 into which leads a passage 69. The size of the passage 69 substantially equal to but not less than the Width of the lock bolt 33 between the notches 40, and the Width ot the rete ing member 67 should be t he length of the slot 41.
.o ely less than the opening 68 being ot a Width slightly greater than the Width ot the lock bolt 33.
Assuming that the lock device has been mounted upon a door, it will be apparent that the latch bolt 15 is controlled by movement of the knob 31 in the usual manner. rlhe position or" the lock bolt 33 is controlled by movement of the key. Assuming that the door is unlocked, the lock bolt 33 Will-o course be in fully retracted position, as indicated by the dotted lines at the left, the notches 40 being at this time out of registration With the slot 41. the ordinary manner, the operator the key, the slot-s receivin.fr the ribs 52 and the bifurcation 57 receiving the bae lug 5S. After the key is inserted, .it is turned one revolution in a counterclockivise direction, whereupon the bit 56 will engage the shoulder 39 and project the lock bolt 33 one step into the position shown by full lines in Figure 4. It should be stated that the baiiie guard is received Wiy n the slots 59 when the key is turned. This rotation oit' the bit, causes the bit to engage the downwarly extending portion 46 of the at about the time the bit engages the shoulder 39, so that the tongue 43 of the spring Will be lifted sutiicieiitly to permit the bolt to be projected the one step., es above mentioned. After the key is turned through one complete revolution, the tongue 43 Will of course engage next not 2 hold the lock bolt stationary. rllhis operation locks the door sutlicientlv tor ordinary purposes.
When the occupants of a dwelling intend to be absent for appreciable time, it is intended that the uiixihnry device sl'iown in Figure 5 be used. In applying this device the key is turned once as above described whereupon the notches 40 will register with the slot 41. The hook is passed through the eye 66 and driven into the jamb, and the retaining member 67 is inserted through the slot 41, the passage 69 passing over the lock bolt between the notches 40. The key is then given a second rotation in the same or counter-clockwise direction, whereupon the bit 56 will engage the lug 3 8 and move inserts To lock the door ink lOD dit)
the bolt 33 into fully projected position,as shown by the right hand dotted lines in Figure 4C, the notches 40 being then out of register With the slot 41 and with the bolt engaged Within the opening 68 in the retaining member 67 the spring tongue 43 at this time engaging the last one of the notches 42. After this double locking, the key is removed. In removing the auxiliary locking device and unlocking the door, the reverse operation is followed, and it is believed that further description is unnecessary.
study of the drawings, it Will be apparent that I have thus provided a very simple and easily applied and operated, non-pickable vlocking and auxiliary securing attachment therefor, which Will be highly advantageous for use particularly in connection with doors for guarding dwellings or other buildings from intrusion by robbers or other unauthorized persons. As the structure is so simple, it is apparent that there is little to get out of order so that the device should have a long life and satisfactorily perform all its functions.
