S. BERGLASS LAMP FIXTURE Filed April 8 1922 avwentoz 67M senor/ion nnnenass,
OF NEJI YORK, N. Y.
LAMP FIXTURE.
Application filed April 8,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that T, SOLOMON BnncLAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county oi York, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp Fin tures; and I do hereby declare the following to be atull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to electric lamp fixtures of the type which consists of a frame, adapted to be secured to a lamp socket, this frame being provided with means for holding a lamp globe.
Th improvement which constitutes the subject matter of the present invention consists of means for ecuring the frame to the socket, and for securing the globe to the frame, in such a manner hat the globe cannot be removed, or the frame taken from the socket without the aid or" a key.
It is accordingly an object of the present invention toprovide a lamp fixture of the type above mentioned, which may be inaccessibly fastened to the lamp socket. A further object is to provide a means whereby the lamp globe may be secured to the frame so that it cannot be removed except by the aid of a key. My improved device not only prov es a safe mounting for the globe but also insures the lamp bulb from being removed from the globe unless the key is used.
As ordina -ly constructed a fixture of this type consists of a frame having a large outer cylindrical portion or band and a relatively small inner band haing a break or gap in a portion of its circumference and adapt-' ed to be secured to lamp socket by means of a thumb screw lnidging the gap. The outer and inner bands are interconnected by a plurality of members, usually of sheet metal, fastened thereto. The outer band is provided with a number of set screws, usually 3, which engage threaded holes spaced around the circurntercucc of the hand. These screws are adapted to engage the lip of a lamp globe which is inserted in the outer band. When the screws are tightened the globe is rigidly secured to the fixture.
My improved fixture is quite similar in appearance to the ordinary fixture above described. The usual outer and inner cylindrical portions or bands, interconnected by 1922. Serial No. 550,658.
suitable members, are employed. The gap in the inner band is adapted to be closed by a screw, to secure the fixture to the socket. This screw, however, instead of being an ordinary thumb screw, is constructed in such a manner that it may be turned by a key. The head of the screw is enclosed in a suitable casing or sleeve sothat it is inaccessible, and can be turned only by 'insorting the key into the sleeve until it ongages the screw head.
In the preferred form, the inner band is provided with two substantial radial eaten sions, integral therewith, these extensions being located at each side 01"- the gap and extended outwardly from the center of the band. Two holes, located opposite to each other are provided in these extensions, one of the holes being threaded. A sleeve fixed to each extension, concentric with the hole therein, each sleeve being secured to the outside or" its respective extension and projecting away from the gap, substantially tangent to the band. The above mentioned screw engages the threaded hole, with which one extension is rovided, the threaded end of the screw being enclosed in the sleeve fixed to said extension, and the head of the screw is enclosed in the other sleeve which is attached to the other extension. The head of the screw is preferably so large that it will not pass through the hole in the last named extension. Both sleeves are so long that the ends of the screw are inaccessibly enclosed therein. The sleeves may be made of an suitable material, preferably metal and of any size and shape provided they are long enough and of small enough cross section relative to the screw, so that the screw cannot be turned except by aid otthe key.
Another important feature of the presentinvention is the means provided for securing thelamp globeto the fixture. Two
of the three set-screws ordinarily used for this purpose are replaced by suitable lugs fixed to the outer band in any suitable man nor, as by riveting or by soldering to the inner base of the band. The third supporting member consists of a screw threaded in the outer ring in the usual manner. The portion of this screw projecting outwardly from the band is enclosed in a sleeve fixed to the band, concentric with the threaded hole therein. The screw is preferably provided with a head similar to the of the details shown in Fig. 2.
head on the screw associated with the inner band, so that the same key may be used to turn both screws. An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a'partial section view of the device fastened to a lamp socket and holding a lamp globe.
big. 2 1s a top view of the device showing the details of construction.
Fig. 3 is a section view talren on line 83 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of some Referring to the drawing, more particularly to Figures 2 and 3, the frame consists of an outer band 1 of sheet metal fastened to an inner band 20f similar material by members 3 preferably stamped in tegral with the outer band 1 and fixed to the inner band 2 by means of rivets 41-. Ex-
tensions and 6 are provided on the inner band 2 on each side of the gap 7 in that band. The extension 5 is provided with a threaded hole 8 and a sleeve 9 fastened to the extension concentric with the hole 8 and preferably closed at its outer end. The other extension 6 is provided with a hole 10 opposite the hole 8 in extension 5, and with a sleeve 11 concentric with the hole 10. This sleeve 11 is open at its outer end to permit the insertion of a key 12 to engage with the head of the screw 13. By turning the screw 13 by means of the key 12, the extensions 5 and 6 may be brought close together. This changes the size of the inner band 2 so that it may be made to grip a lamp socket A as shown in Figure 1.
In order to secure a lamp globe C tothe frame, one or more lugs 1 1 are fixed to the .outerband 1 in such a manner that they cannot be removed when the globe is attached. These lugs 14 are preferably soldered to the outer band 1. An adjustable supporting element for the globe is provided. which consists of the screw 15 engaging a threaded hole in the outer band 1. A sleeve 16 is fixed to the outer band 1 concentric with this threaded'hole, and enclosing the screw 15. This sleeve 16 is so long that the screw 15 cannot be turned except by inserting the key 12 until it engages the head of the screw.
To attach the globe C to the frame it is necessary to unscrew the screw 15 by means of the key 12 until the inner end of the screw is substantially even with the inner face of the band 1, insert the lip D of the globe C above the lugs is and then tighten the screw 15. .Vhen the globe C is attached to the frame, as shown in 'Fig. 1, the lamp bulb cannot be removed except by means of the key 12. It is therefore apparent that the improved device not only provides a means for insuring the globe against theft,
but also protects the bulb.
Another feature of the invention consists of theimproved mounting provided for the extensions 5 and 6, as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4. A projection 18 is provided on the outer band 1 preferably integral therewith. This projection has a raised or bent-up portion 17 having a slot 19 provided therein. The ends of the extensions 5'and 6 project through this slot 19 and are free to move therein when the screw 13 is turned to bring the extensions 5 and 6 closer together or farther apart as the case may be. By this slidable mounting the size of the inner band 2 may be changed without distorting the band as would be necessary if one end were fixed to the outer band.
It is apparent that the arrangement, size and proportions of the parts may be varied without departing from the principle of the invention which is not confined to the particular embodiments shown and described, but is intended to cover such modification thereof as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
I claim:
In a lamp fixture of the'character described, the combination with an outer band, and inner band having a break in the circumference thereof, and means for interconnecting said outer and inner bands, of an extension on each free end of said inner band, a screw engaging a threaded hole in one of said extensions and adapted to create a tension between said extensions, sleeves fixed to said extensions and enclosing the ends of said screw, a lug fixed to said outer band, a screw engaging a threaded hole in said outer band, and a sleeve fixed to said outer band and enclosing the head of said screw.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
SOLOMON BERGLASS.
