Description

H. Ai BEHN.
Temporary-Binders.
No.l50,391.
Patented May 5,1874.
UNITED HENRY A. BEEN, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN TEMPORARY BlNDERS.
Specification forming fait of Letters Patent No. h50,39l e dated May 5, 1874; application tiled March 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'HENRY A. BEHN, of
. the city of Troy, in the State of New York,
have invented a new and Improved Temporary Binder, of which the following is a specification:
rIhe nature of my invention consists in the construction of a case forming the back of the book, to which flapping covers are attached, and which said case is provided with two or more hinged pins, securely fastened by a springbar attached to the inside of said case. Upon these hinged pins partlyflexible b ick-pieces are placed, (as many as the case will hold,) to which the papers, letters, music, or ot-her papers to be preserved in book-shape can be attached by means of gum or paste. By this arrangement any sheet or pie-ce of music can easily be taken out and replaced by others, and, when the book is opened and placed on the table or music-stand, the pages will, on account of i.the peculiar construction of the flexible back-pieces, lie perfectly flat.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure I represents the inside of case when the book is open, with the ilegible back pieces-removed, embodying my invention. Fig. II is a longitudinalAsect-ion of the same. Fig. III shows a horizontal section of the saine. Figs. IV and Y represent side view and section ofthe backpiece. v
A is a case, made of metal or strong pasteboard, and forming theback part of the book, and having on its front apping covers B B, attached so as to open and close similar to a book. On one side, at the inside of the case A, two er more pins, C O, are hinged, extending the whole width of the case, and resting, when closed, upon small projections m., attached on the opposite side in the case A. (See Fie. III.) On the top of the case A a bar, D, is hinged at n n, resting upon the outer ends of the pins G C, so as to keep the same down in their places, and fastened on the bottom or lower part of the case A by means of a hook, J, acted upon by a spring, S, arranged in the lower part of the case A.
By this arrangement the pins C C will be securely locked in their places; and, by removing the hook J from the end ofthe bar D, the same can be turned clear of the pins C C, allowing the same to be turned upward for the purpose of removing any one of the back-pieces N, and replacing the same by others.
The backpieces N consist of an internal strengtheningpiece, w, made of metal, wood, or heavy pasteboard, and covered by cloth o, or any other suitable and flexible material. Suitable holes x a', corresponding in size and position with the projecting pins O O, are made through the strengthening'-piece w and the cloth or other covering c, to fit easily over said pins C. Some little distance from the front edge ot' the piece w the covering o is sewed together, and the same is made sufficiently wide to allow the ends o c to project about onequarter or one -half of an inch. The insides of these projecting ends 'u' c are gummed, so that, by being moistened, any paper or sheet of music will readily adhere to the saine. These back-pieces N are placed upon the pins O O, (see Fig. III,) so as to lill the whole inside of the casing A, when the pins O, together with those backpieees, are turned down, and securely locked by means of the bar D, as above described, when the binder is completed, and any sheets of music or paper L may then readily be attached.
The seams where the covering is sewed together being some distance from the stiffening` piece w, the sheets Il, whenever the book is opened, will lie perfectly straight and flat against the flapping covers B, facilitating thereby the reading of the music, or any other writing on the sheets L attached to the saine. VhatI claim as my inventiomand desire to secure by Letters Batent, is
The case A wih flapping covers B B, in combination with hinged pins C O, hinged bar D, andV spring hook J, all arranged and con structed substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described and specied. u HENRY A. BEIIN. Yitn esses:
HENRY E. Bonnnn, C. THORNTON.
