IMPROVEMENT IN SEAL-LOCKS.

Specification forming part of L etiers Patent No. 152,605, dated June 30, 1874; application filed May 8, 1674.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, LEON M. OLEUGH and VVILLIAM A. BAYLY, both of the town of St. Marys, in the county of Perth and Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to seallocks, in which a label or seal must be torn or broken before the lock can be unlocked, thus indicating if the look has been tampered with by unauthorized persons. The improvements are fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of the lock, showing the internal parts in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same.

The lock is, preferably, of that class termed spring-padlocks and, referring to the accompanying drawings, a represents the hasp, pivoted at one end of the look, as shown at b, and having a catch 0 at its free end, onto which the latch-bar dis forced by a spring when the lock is looked, the same being unlocked by passing a key or other device through an aperture and bearing on the pin 0 for throwing the bar (1 off the catch 0. The face-plate of the lock is provided with a triangular-shaped opening n, to the upper edge of which is hinged a triangular-shaped cover or shield, f, acted on by a spring to force the The label. or card is confined in place over the shield or cover fby the flanges jj, which form grooves g 9, (shown in dotted lines,) into which the label is passed in from the top of the look, after which the hinged cover his turned down and confined in place by the shoulders m on the hasp, and the label cannot be removed without first unlocking the lock, which cannot be accomplished without first breaking the label or card, and raising the shield f to uncover the opening for the insertion of the key.

The label is constructed of any stiff cardboard or paper, or such material, and is provided with the required number, date, or other device. It will be seen that thelabelis not entirely destroyed by unlocking the look, but it can be preserved for future reference.

We claim as our invention- In combination with a lock having grooves g g for confining in place a label or card, a shield or cover, f, hinged in an aperture in the face-plate of. the lock and covering the opening for the insertion of the key, substantially as described, whereby the label must be punctured and the hinged shield raised before the lock can be unlocked, as set forth.
