UNITED STATES j 1,551,982 PATENT OFFICE.
FRED H. DOERR, 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO DOERR MANUFACTUR- ING COMPANY, 0F GRAND RAPIDS,MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F MICHIGANZ COMBINATION RECEPTACLE.
Application led April 26, 1923. v Serial No. 634,698.
To all 'whom t may concern.' j
Be it known that I, FRED I-I. DoERR, a
y'citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State ofy Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Receptacles, of which the following is a specification. l v
This invention relates to a ynew and improved combination receptacle and more specifically to a receptacle adapted to be used for holding various articles and to be mounted upon the inner wall of an automobile or the like. y
It is an object of the present invention to provide a combination receptacle adapted to hold conveniently a plurality of related articles which may be used by the occupants of the vehicle.
It is a further object to provide a construction which is compact, in which the articles are readily accessible and which may be readily dismantled for cleaning.
It is an additional object to provide a construction in which articles may be lifted and maintained in convenient position when the receptacle is open.'
It is an additional object to provide a receptacle of this character which is adjustable to contain articles of varying size.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
Ihave illustrated a preferred embodiment ofkmy invention in the accompanying draw ings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the recepf tacle; f
Figure 2 is a section taken on line 2-2 of Figure 3; l
Figure 3 is a section taken on line `3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure' 4 is a view taken on line 4 4 of Figure 2; and
'Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective showing the lid check construction.
The particular form of receptacle shown is adapted for containing smokers articles and comprises the mam cas1ng11 which contains three chambers. The chamber12 is adapted to contain matches and is provided with a lateral opening 13 adapted to expose the portion of the match box which is coated with material for igniting the matches. The base 14 of the chamber 12 is provided with a stud 15 which holdsupwardly the match containing slide 16 of the match box as shown in Figure 2. The stud 15 takes up but a small area and larger types of matches may bey inserted in the chamber without being contained'in a box.
The second chamber 17 is provided with the hinged lid 18 having the finger piece 19. The lid is provided with the inturned arms `2O and 21 to which are pivotally secured the angular lift links 22 and 23. The lower ends of these links are pro-vided with the rivets 24 and 25 which pass through slots 26 and 27 in the sidesof the movable container 28, lthe heads of the rivets bearing against the lnner surface of the container adjacent the slots. The belleville springs 29 and 30 are fitted upon the rivets 24 and 25, the
peripheryV of the springs bearing against the outer surface of the container 28. The bottom ofthe container 28 is provided with the knob 31.
The third chamber contains the movable extending lug 38 as shown in Figure 5, this lug cooperating with the spring 39 to maintain the lid in any position to which it may be adjusted.
The partition 40 between thelehainbers 12 and 17 extends upwardly above the lid 18 cov-ering the chamber 17. The partition 40 is provided with the notch 41 adapted to receive the arm 2O and the rivet 42 which connects arm 20 and link 22 when the lid is closed. The partition 43 between the second and third chambers is provided with similar slot 44 to receive the head of the rivet and the arm v21. The upper portion 45 of this slot is cut away to form a notch adapted `to receive 'and retain against dis-l placement a cigar orcigarette which may be rested upon top 18 with its burning end located Vabove the container 32. j In this case the lid 37 of the third chamber will be in the raised position.
puffs, or other articles.
les
be secured to the inner wall of the vehicle. Although the device has been described as being used in automobiles, it is obviously' capable of being used in other situations and other locations. If desired, it may be provided with feet or with any usual form of base to adapt it for support upon a desk or table. The particular method of support forms no part of the present invention and suchmeans are well known in the art. f
In the use of the receptacle, abox of matches may be placed in the first chambe-r. The second or intermediate chamber is y,adapted to receive cigars or cigarettes. This chamber is adjustable as to cap-acity as is clearly shown in Figure 3. The belleville springs serve to firmly retain the container 28 in adjusted position relative to the links and they ar-e suiiiciently yielding to permlt his adjustment by pulling down or pushing kup the knob 31.
For cigars the container would be used 1n a lowered position While for,3 cigarettes it would be used in angupper position.
The belleville springs have the additional function of pressing the links 22 and 23 yieldingly aga-inst the side walls of the chamber so that the lid 18 and the container and its contents are maintained at any position in which they may be placed by raising or lowering the lid 18 by means of the finger grip 19.
The container 32 is adapted to receive ashes. As has been stated, the lid 37 above this container is maintained in adjusted position' by means of lug 38 and spring 39. The container may be readily withdrawn from below by turning the handle 35 sufficiently to clear the nose of the catch 33 from .the slot 36.
ll/Vhile these receptacles havebeen spoken of as containing cigars or cigarettes and ashes it is obvious that the construction may be adapted to other purposes; The various containers may receive calling cards, powder One specific form of construction has been shown by way of illustration but it is my intention to cover all such modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
