Description
H. ELLIOT..
Slide-Valves for` Steam-Engines.
Patented sept. 22,1874.

UNITED STATES PATENT GEEIoE.
HENRY ELLIOT, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLIDE-VALVES FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,298, dated September 22, 1874; application tiled June 30, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY ELLIOT, of East St. Louis, St. Clair county, Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Slide-Valves for Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification:
This is an improvement on the valve described in my patent No. 130,492, dated Angust 13, 1872. The improvement consists in. forming channels or steam-ports in the lower side of the bearing-bar, so as to allow the steam to enter the cylinder-ports by that means. These channels are preferably made in a direction oblique to the bar, as shown, so as to wear no channels in the valve-seat.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Figs. 2 and 3 are perspective views, showing` face views of the valve.
The valve Gr is made of the same general form as that shown in my former patent. The valve-seat is as usual, and the parts are designated by the same letters as in my former patent aforesaid, in which A is a portion ot' the steam-cylinder 5 B, valve-seat, having bearings b bf; C, induction steam-ports; D, exhaust-port; E, steam-chest; F, valve-stem; G, valve; H, bearing-bars; I, usual bearing-face ofthe valve. The improvement applies to the outer bearing, which is constructed in the same general form as in my said former patent, having the same end project-ion shown at h forming part of the bearing-bar H. K K, &c., are a number of channels, steam-ports, or passages made in the lower sides of the bars H to allow the steam to pass from the steam-chest to the port C when the valve is in the proper position. In Figs. l and 2 the channels K form the sole means of communication between the valve-chest and the steamports, the channel L', into which the channels or passages K open, not extending through the top of the valve; while in Fig. 3 is shown a modification, in which the vertical orifices or ports L are retained as in the former patent, and the channels or passages K made ot smaller section, a portion only of the steam passing through them.
lt is considered desirable that the steam should be permitted to come in contact with the under side of the bearing H to balance to some extent the top pressure; also, that it is desirable that the steam should have means of freely entering the ports C when the valve has full throw, and when the bar H would partially cover the port; also, to more freely admit the lubricants between the faces of the valve and seat; and to meet these requirements I have devised this improvement.
These ends would be met to some extent by making the passages K transverse to the bar H 5 but in that case the bearing-faces between the passages would wear depressions in the faces b; and to avoid this I have made the passages oblique to the line of motion, so that all parts of the bearing-faces b shall be equally worn, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawing.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the bearings H, steampassages or channels K in the lower side ot' the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of said invention I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day ot' June, IS7-l.
HENRY ELLIOT.
