UNITED STATES ATENT QFFICE.
PLINY G. WILLIAMSON, OF GOVINGTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE W. ROUGH, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,664, dated December 8, 1874; application filed October 16, 1874.
' Oovington, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and
I do hereby declare that the following, is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a washingmachine, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section on line 00 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail, showing the construction of roller G.
A represents the base or bottom of my washer, from which rise two vertical end pieces, B B, connected at or near their upper ends by a round or bar, 0. E represents a frame, containing a series of small washingrollers, D D, and supported upon spiral springs a a. The frame E is guided by means of ears b b, projecting inward from the end pieces B B, so that the frame will move vertically by the pressure of the clothes passing through the machine. Above the rollers D D is the large washing-roller G, the journals (1 cl of which have their bearings in the end pieces B B. All the rollers D and G are provided -with circular recesses t 2', arranged in paral lel rows, at suitable distances apart, and these recesses on each roller are arranged so that those of one row are between those of the adjoining rows. In the center of each recess 1' on the large roller G is a wart or projection, :10, which very materially assists in the process of washing, and gathers the clothes, holding them in position. H is a large cog-wheel with armsK K, to which the handles I I are attached Motion is received from the cog-wheel H to roller G by means of the pinion h. The washer may be attached to the tub by means of cleats m m near the inside bottom of the tub, and the pivoted cross-bar J on top of the bed-piece A.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a washing-machine, the roller G, pro vided with parallel rows of circular recesses i 'i, and the circular warts or projections 00 r, all as and for the purpose setforth.
2. The combination, in a washing-machine, of roller G, having circular recesses and projections 00 w, and a frame supported by springs or a, and having rollers D D, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PLINY 0. WILLIAMSON.
