T all to 710m it may concern:
" Be it known that we, EUenNIo N. on Ancoonr. and FRANCISCO O. on Anooonn, citizens of Mexico, and residents of Mexico City, Mexico, have invented a new and Improved Twisting Device, 01" which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for twist ing together a plurality of cords 0r strands l of material in order to form a heavier cord or rope and has particular reference to a device of this character which is preferably detaehably connected with and operable by the bobbin winder of a sewing machine.
The invention furthermore includes an element which is adapted for connection with astationary member for supporting the opposite endsof the cords or strands to be twistedl One of the principal objects of the present invention is to provide an extremely simple and improved twisting device which functionsto uniformly twist together a plurality of cords or strands to produce a heavier cold or rope andwhich is found capable of use to uniformly cover one'strand by a plurality oat helieally wound strands of material. v I
As a still further object the invention comprchends in a "twisting device, means for compensating for the decrease in the length v0t the strands being twisted in o-rderto prevent breakage of the strands under the twisting action. i
The inventionfurthermore aims to provide a twisting device ofthe character set forth which is" extremely simple in its construction and mode of operation, which is inexpensive to manufacture and which is highly eflicient in its purpose. I would have it understood that my device could as well be used "for na-kin cord and rope out of ribhon, such as crepe paper ribbon, etc, silk ribbon, and the like. V
With. the above recited and other objects in view, the invention resides in thenovel construction set forth in the following specification, particularly pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings, it being understood that the'riglit reserved to embodiments other than those actually illustrated herein, to the full extent indicated by the general-meaning oi the terms in whichthe claims are expressed. i i In the drawings- 1F igure 1 is a side elevation of the twisting device in use and as applied to a sewing machine bobbin winder;' Figure 2 is an enlarged View with parts in section to disclose the underlying structure;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a slightly modified use of the invention; 1 Figure 4 is a side elevation of the driving element which cooperates with the bobbin winder oft-he machine; I
Figure 5 is an e nd view thereof; and Figure 6 is a top plan view or the element for supporting the opposite end of the strands. 7
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference A designates asew'ing machine provided with the usual bobbin winding device B which is operated by the driving belt G of the machine and which bobbin winding device is provided with a rotary shaft D. E represents the baclcoi a chair or other fixed object which is spaced'l rom the machine and F the strands or cords which are to be twisted together for the purpose o-f producing the heavier cord or rope. a
The device for effecting the twisting cornprises a drive element 10 whicl'i-is providedwith a'solid head 11 atone end and with a substantially cylindrical axially projecting sleeve 12 at its opposite end which is slitted inwardly from its open end as at 13 to'provide a multiplicity of radially contractible spring fingers '"lhe solidend is provided with a substantially triangular looped ele- 11191111 15 with which one en'dof the strands l! are associated. A, supporting element desiguated generally by the reference character 1b is designed tor the opposite ends of the strands and in the preferred,useo fthe device said element 18 des gned to hold the strands in a fixed relation while the driving element 10 rotates the strands toefiect the intertwisting thereof. The element 16 includes a spring clip 17 having spaced resilient legs 18 and 19. The leg 19 is provided with an outwardly offset portion 29 which is aper-tured as at 21. A. stud bolt 21 having a r @FHQEi headed end ..-2 and a threaded end 23 is inserted through the aperture 21 wit-h a retaining nut 24 threadedly engaged thereon and lying within the offset portion 20. Ad acent its outer headed end 22 the stud bolthas mounted thereon a sleeve member 25 with which a substantially triangular loopedelement 26 is swingingly connected. A washer 27 is interposed between the sleeve member 25 and the outer face of the offset portion 20 and the sleeve member 25 is clamped in place by engaging a screw driver in the kerf 28 of the head 22. In order to compensate for the reduction in the lengthof the strands F as they are twisted, the ends G of the strands are associated with the eye H at the outer end of a coiled contractile spring J the inner end K of whichis engaged with the triangular loop 26. It thus follows that when the spring clip 17 is engaged with a fixed object E such as the back of a chair or the like and the sleeve 12 is coupled with the shaft D of the bobbin winder, that operation of the bobbin winder will effect arotation of the driving element 10 tocause the twisting of the strands F. It isof course obvious that as the twisting of the strands F takes place, the coiled contractile springJ will stretch to compensate for the decrease in the length of the strands.
In some instances it has been found desirableto cover a central strand or wire L with an outer helically associated covering strip M and in this instance the stud screw 21 as illustrated in Figure 3 is unscrewed to release the sleeve 25 from the clamping action so thatthe sleeve is'swivelled on the stud screw for rotation with the central strand or wire L as the same is rotated by theidriving element 10. The operator after associating the outer covering strip M with one end of theLwire L proceeds to feed the same throughout the length of the central strand or wire L so that the outer strip is helically wound thereon.
