BoXQoAsnj N E K This invention has been devised primarily with the object of providing improved means whereby the difierent members. used intheiformati'on of a box or'case, maybe bound together in their assembled and .in such a manner that they freed at will and parted from one may be another so that they may be stacked into a comparatively smallcompass as with collapsible;

When turned'out, thistop hinged portionmayihave its ends drawntogether andoverlapped so that-the band-is strained I the box tokeep upon the end" upon the bottom and sides of such members firmly bound pieces while the box" is being" filled and emptied. Then, -When' the. lid has been re placed, the top hinged portion is again loosenedyturnedin overfthe'lid, and then strained tight? by theoperationof the lever plate D. j; Q '7 The said, lever plate is kept in the-strained straining it is then necessary to prise the' band up vge'ther and overlapped in the same manner as with the lever. In such a case the disc plate is formed with apertures I therein to receive the prongs of a double pronged handle'tool, by meansof which the plate may be actuated in the required manner. The disc plate is also formed with a turned up catch 6 inits edge for acting in the same 7 manner as-the catch (5 of the lever D.
The lever plate I) may also, if desired be formed with the apertures F to receive theturning tool prongs but such will not be required when the lever is made long enough to obtain the necessary straining leverage.
Then the device is to be usedto fasten on the lid of a box only, the top portion of the straining bands have their ends pivoted to the small metal'plates G let into the box sides at the necessary positions, these parts then acting in the same manner as with the collapsible box previously described. These fastening means may be formed-of hoop iron, as shown at'the right'hand end of Figure 6, or of strong wire, as shown at the left hand end of such figure, as may be deslred in each c rcumstance.
If desired, the corners of the box with which the bands engage, may be protected from wear by metal corner plates I-I (Figure 3) affixed thereto. j
I claim 1. Box and case cover 77 I I fastening means. formed by two metallic straps. disposed to extend continuously across the top of the said cover, at eacliend thereof, such-straps having their respeotiveouter ends pivotally connected to the sides of the box or case, and having their adjacent inner ends pivotally connected'to the' face of a turning plate at points vrelatiyely disposed thereon so that when the plate is turned in one direction the said ends are drawn together and overlapped and when turned in the other direction, are moved apart, substantially as. and for the purposes specified.
2. Inv box and case cover fastening means formed in the manner covered by claim 1, construct ng the said central plate with a projection on its face adapted to engage the edge. of one strap and hold the plate when theplate is turned to the first mentioned position, substantially specified.
3.In boxes, cases and the like, the combination with the cover fastening means set forth in claim 1, of a band of metal adapted to' encircle the two sides and bottom of the box or case and to the respective upper ends of which the corresponding ends of the said.
fastening means are pivotally attached,.substantially as and for the purposes herein specified; 7 1
ti. In a collapsible box or caseformed by loose side, bottom and top members assembled together around end pieces, a clamping band for encircling each end of the assembled box or case, formed by a metallic band extending across the bottom and up each side to near the top and two metallic straps, oneof which has its outer end pivoted to one of the said band ends and; the inner endsof which are pivotally connected to the surface ofa plate at points so disposed that in one direction willdraw the ends together with an overlapping locking'action and its turning in the other direction will open out such ends, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature.
