2 1927. March 9 J. R. MAHAN POLISHED ROD GRIP Filvd DeO. 24. 1926 IN1/Ewan ATTORNEY'.
Patented Mar. 29, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH n. MAHAN, or TOLEDO, OHIO, Assrenon To THE NATIONAL SUPPLYCOM- PANY, OFTOLEDO, onto, A CORPORATION 'or' OHIO.
POLISHED-ROD GRIP.
Application led December '24, 195426.v Serial No. .156,856.
My invention-relates to polished rod grips which@ re devices for connecting the polished rods of a Well puinping apparatus to the reins or other means that are reciprocatedd' by one end of a walking beamor the like.
The principal Object of this invention is to provide a pollshed rod grip With trunnionsand reins which may be connected and disconnected without the use of any extra 1o tool or apparatus.
Referring to the`accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 is a perspectiveview'of my polished rod-grip to which are attached a portion of two reins and a portion of a polished rod.
Fig. 2 is anedge view Of Fig.' 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical section of Fig. l, the section including the screws 4, the rod 3 and the nuts 5 being in elevation. v
On the drawing, 1 designates the body of the grip which is preferably made of a single piece of steel provided with a central longitudinal hole 2 containing the polished rod 3 which is clamped in the hole 2 by the two clamps '11 in the `form of screw-eyes.
The eyes 12 of the clamps received the rod o and are slidable transversely of the rod in the-slots 1 3 in the body 1. The screws 4 integral with the eyes 12 project. through the holes 15 in the body 1 and have` thereon the nuts 5 which bear on the outer face of the body and draw the eyes into tightlygrip- -ping engagement with the rod 3.
The bodyl is also provided with two trunnions 6 extending `from the opposite edges of the body 1 at right angles to the hole 2 and rod 3, and having at their outer ends the heads 7 which are shown to be* approximately elliptical or elongated in a, plane vcutting the rod 3 transversely at rightangles. For each trunnion a rein 8 is provided having at its' lower end the trunnion support 9 Whose eye or opening' 1() is elongated longitudinally of the rein, of vertically considering the rein to be suspended vertically in use as shown. The width, or horizontal orl transverse dimension o f the eyes 10 is slightly less than the shorter axis o-r width of the heads 7. The length or vertical dimension ofthe eyes 10 is somewhat larger than the. longer 'axis .of the heads, and the longer the width of the veyes 10.l
'lhe trunnion supports can be readily aS- scinbled With the trunnions by turning the supports 9 so that the longer laxes of the eyes 10 Will register Withth'e longitudinal axes of the heads. Then the supports can be readilyslid over the heads 7 and the sup- `axis of the heads issomewhat larger than ports 9 turned 90 on the trunnions when means. The reins 8 are shown as ropes butl they may be rods. The bearings 9 may be variously made, the particular construction thereof and theirfmode .of connection with the rods or ropes on which lthey are suspended not forming a 'novel part of this.
invention.
I claim In a polished rod operating device, a pair of suspension means each having vertically elongated eyes, a body having a vertical hole therein fora polished rod, means carried byr the body for clamping the rod to the body, horizontal trunnions projecting from opposite sides of the body and seated in the lower ends of the said eyes, and heads on the trunnions beyond the outer faces of the suspen- `sion means, thevertical dimension of heads being not greater than the Width of the eyes and the horizontal dimension of the heads being greater than the vwldth ofthe eyes and not greater than4 the length thereof, the
heads overlapping the suspensionnneans at both sidesof the eyes.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature. Y
JOSEPHv n. MAHAN.
