IMPROVEMENT IN SOCKS, MITTENS, 84c.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,209, dated May 11, 1875; application filed March 15, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN KENT, of the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Socks, Mits, and other articles of wearing apparel; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to improvements in socks, leggings, mits, and similar articles of apparel, both for children and adults, its object being to make these articles in such a manner that they shall be elastic and extremely soft and comfortable, and at the same time almost impervious to cold and rain. The nature of my invention consists in making the said articles of a double thickness of a knitted plush fabric, having a knitted surface 011 one side and a plush surface on the other side, the said knitted surfaces thereof being placed in contact, so that the plush surfaces will form both the inside and outside surfaces of the sock or other article when completed, by which means it is made extremely soft and elastic, and nearly if not quite storinproof.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a view of a childs sock made in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 2 a sectionalview of the fabric. But I wish it' to be understood that I do not confine myself to any particular form or shape of the article, the essence of my invention being in the material itself, and the mode of adapting it to the purposes specified.

This is composed of two thicknesses of knitted plush fabric, each having a knitted surface, I), on one side and a plush surface, 0, on the other side, the knitted surfaces of the two being placed together, as shown in Fig. 2. The particular fabric which I usually employ for this purpose is a knitted plush, in-

vented jointly by myself and one Henry Leeson, for which Letters Patent have been allowed, but not yet issued, at the date of this present application. But other fabrics having a knitted surface on one side and a plush face on the other will answer the purpose. The knit body of the fabric I generally make of cotton, and the plush surface of either wool or cotton 5 but other suitable material may be substituted for either. The plain knit surfaces of the fabric being placed together, or face to face, it is cut into the proper shape or form of the article, or into pieces of the proper form, as in the ordinary manner of cutting out gloves and similar articles, and the pieces being seamed may be trimmed with any suitable fringe or edging, d. In some articles a seam is unnecessary, as the pieces may be brought into the proper form in the process of knitting. This invention is applicable to socks, mits, leggings, hoods, imitation fur collars, and victorines for children, and also to similar articles for the use of adults, and more especially for invalids, inasmuch as it possesses the several important properties of elasticity, softness, warmth, and imperviousness to cold and rain.

The inner and outer portions may be of different colors and of different materials as may be desirable.

I am aware that knitted goods With a fleecy or nap surface have been used as a lining for gloves, socks, &c., and that I do 7' claim as my invention. Neither do I claim broadly an article of wearing apparel composed of two thicknesses of fabric, both or either having a fieecy, nap, pile, or fur surface, placed outwardly irrespective of the particular texture of the body of the fabric, as

used in fur-lined fur gloves and in some kinds of reversible garments. My object is to produce an article combining the several properties of elasticity, softness, warmth, and imperviousness to rain and cold, and I confine myself to the use of a knitted fabric of the I kind hereinbefore mentioned.

What I claim as my invention is- As a new and improved article of manufacture, a sock, mit, or other article of wearing apparel, composed of two thicknesses of knitted plush fabric, each having a plain knitted surface on one side and a plush surface on the other side, the plain knitted surfaces thereof being placed face to face, as and for the purposes herein set forth.
