I Application filed December 31, .1925. Serial No. 78,622.
Thisinvention relates to a mold to be portions of the walls comprising'the two used by children in moldingwet, sand in remaining edges thereof i being extended the form ofa house, and also relates to the abovethe horizontal plane occupied by the V I combination with'such a mold, oi members upper edges of the walls 1 and 2. A hinge 60 5 which are adapted to be partially embedded. joint of any desired type, indicatedby the in the molded form to represent doors and numeral 5, hingedly connects the wall 1 windows, etc., and one of the objects. of the and the 'wall 3; a similar'hinge joint 6 con present invention is to provide a mold which nects thevertical edges of the walls 1, and may b adily set up even by a' small 4, and a similar hinge joint 7 connects the 6a 10 childwho' has no knowledge of mechanics, vertical edges of the walls 2 and 4, so that. andreadily opened after the sandhas been all ofthe walls may be folded together in packed therein. 1 a substantially flat tormand "the article'thus Another Ob'ectot the invention is to so adapted to occupy a minimum amount of construct the mold that, while it may be space. The' free vertical edge of the wall 70 folded to occupy but little space, it may be 3 is formed with a tongue 8 which preferreadily set up and, when set up, will mainably is of tapered, blunt form, and is snugly .tain its proper shape while being filled with fitted through a slot 9 formed in the tree sand to produce the molded houseimage. edge portion of the wall 2, whenthe mold Another object of the invention is to so structure is set up for use, and at this point 75 2o construct the mold thatthe same may be it will be evident that the'engag'ement of removed from the molded houseimagewiththe tongue 8 m the slot 9 will serve effecout in any Way disturbing said image. tually as a means for preventing any relative Another object of the invention is to displacement of the walls of the mold so provide, in connection with the mold, memthat the same Will be of true rectangular SO bers which. may be readily assembled with form and-maintain this form after having the sides of the house-image to represent been set up. In order that e Wall 2 may indow a d d or p 1 v be prevented from becoming. disengaged In the accompanying drawings: I from the wa1l3, a pin 10, is provided and Figure 1 is a perspective view o1 the mold 1S r m v bly fi d hrough n openlngll 8 set up to receive the sand which is to be formed inthe tongue 8, the pin extending packed'therein to produce the molded house along the outer. Surface of the wall 2 and image. I preferably having connected thereto a chain Figure 2 is a similar View illustrating the. 0; r 0 Other fl l CO neC On 12 manner in which the mold may be separated which, at its other end, is connected, in any 90 from the molded house image without any su1table manner, as at 13, to the wall 3, so
disturbance of any portion of the latter. that the pm will notbe liable to be lost.
Figure 3 is a per'spective view of the house The engagement of the pin through the image with the door and window representopening 11 serves, of course, to prevent ing elements associated therewith, Wit d w f the tongue 8 from the slot 9, 95

Figure 6 is a'perspec the window representing members. The mold proper embodying the invention is formed from sheet metal and comprises wall 1 a d 2 which are b ta tially r the walls 1 and 2 and smoothed off-so that it tangular in shape, and walls 3 and 4: whi h will accord with the inclination of the upper are of substantially pentagonal form, the edges ofthe walls 3 and 4 which are indisides of each of the walls 3 and 4 being cated respectively by the numerals 14 and 15.
parallel and perpendicular, the bottom of In thi manner, a solid rectangular image of 110 each wall being horizontal and at right a house is produced and after this has been angles to the sides of the wall, and the upper accomplished, the pin 10 may be Withdrawn from the opening 11 and the walls of the mold swung away from the sides of the molded image, thus leaving the image intact. At this point, it will be observed that the mold is not drawn upwardly from the molded house image, which would tend to disrupt the molded image, but that the walls are freely swung outwardly from the sides ot the molded image and therefore there is no disturbance whatsoever of the image.
The molded house image is illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawings, and is indicated by the numeral 16 and the same is of acontour correspond ing to the interior contour of the mold described above. Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, illustrate in detail, respectively, door and window members which may be associated with the molded image 16, and the door member is indicated by the numeral 1'? and may be formed from sheet metal and of a substantially rectangular form and may have painted upon its exterior surface the representations of panels or the like, indicated by the numeral 18. liearwardly right angularly extending flanges 19 and 20 are provided at the upper and lower ends of the sheet of metal comprising the member 17, and are adapted to be embedded in one side of the molded house image 16, as clearly shown in Figure 3. The window representinf): HZQIDlQQIQ XVlIiClI1S shown in Figure 6, is indicated in general by the numeral 21 and the same is, as in the case of the door representing member 17, preferably. formed of sheet metal and has painted upon its face representations of window panes, as indicated by the numeral 22, altl'iough, if desired, sheets of isinglass may be adhesively secured upon the' face of the said member. Flanges 23 and 2 1, corresponding to the flanges 19 and 20 are provided at the upper'and lower ends of the member 21 and are adapted t'o be embedded in the sides of the molded house image 16. It will be understood, of course, that any number of door and window members may be provided in connectionwith each mold and that the invention may be extended tothe employment of members representing other portions of a house structure and assembled and maintained in position upon the molded image 16 in the same manner as in the case of the members 17 and 21.
It will be evident that the door and win dow members may be assembled or HSSOCltltGClwith the molded image 16 in any desired manner to suit the fancy of the child using the device and that inasmuch as these members are of a material different from the material of which the molded image 16 is composed, the finished image will be exceptionally attractive in appearance. Furthermore, it will be evident that the entire device comprising the mold and the members represent ing the doors, windows and other house fixtures, may be manufactured at exceptionally low cost, due to their simple construction.
Having thus described the invention, what 1 claim is:
1. A sand mold comprising aplural-ity of walls hingedly connected to one another in a series and adjustable about their hinged connections to provide a mold chan'i'ber of hollow geometric form open at its 'topand bottom. and means for connectingthe free ends of the end ones of the series of walls, one of said walls at its free end being provided with a slot, and the said means comprising a tongue upon the free end of the other well engageahle through the said slot and having an opening therein, and a pin insertable through the opening andengaging the outer side of the first mentioned one of the endmost walls.
2. A toy sand mold set comprising a sand mold of hollow lorm open at its top and bottom to have sand packed therein and thereby form a molded image of a house structure from which image the mold may be removed, and a member representing a portion of a. house structure having means: adapting it to be applied to a portion of the molded house image after removal of the mold therefrom. 3. A door representing member for employment in connection with a mold for producing asolid image of a house of sand, c oniprising a plate having the component parts of a door represented on one face thereotand having flanges at its upper and lower end to be embedded in the molded image, the said flanges projecting from the other fac'e'of the plate. i
In testimony whereof I a fltix my signature.
