HACK-SAW FRAME.
Application `lled July 30,
This invention relates lto hacksaws and `has for its object the `provision of a novel hacksaw frame embodyingmeans whereby a y saw blade may be very quickly and easily 5 placed in position or removed, as the case may be, andA clamped securely .with the proper degree of tension on the blade to 1nsure efficient operation thereof. s c An important object of theinvention is lo to provide a hacksaw frame which is capable of holding hacksaw blades of different lengths, means Vbeing 4moreover provided wherebythe necessary tension on the blade may be had regardless of the length thereof.
16 lAnother object of the. invent-ionis the provision of a hacksaw frame having its bladeengaging elements so constructed or formed that a blademay-be readily mounted for sawing in the same ,plane as the back 20- or at right angles theretoj A more specific object is the provision of a hacksaw frame having a baclr'carryingtan anchor member adjustable therealong for mounting one end of a saw blade, the frame having its handle end carrying a peculiarlyV constructed and fmounted cam means for applying a longitudinal pull upon theblade so be simple and inexpensive to manufacture,
eflicient in use,` a great time and labor saver,
durable in service, and aggeneral improvement in the art. y
With the above and other objects and advantages inr view, the invention preferably consists in the combination and arrangement of parts and the structural features to be hereinafter more i fully described, claimed and illustratedfin the accompanying drawing, in which :.-e
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete hacksaw showing a blade` in secure-d position.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary elevation ofl the handle end showing the blade holding means in released position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section through the handle end showing the blade holding means in operative position, the parts being in the same position as in Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an inverted edge view of the handle end withthe blade omitted, and
1926.V Serial'No. 126,024.
Figure 5 is a detailperspective view of A the saw as comprising'a back 10 formed as an elongated bar of suitable material and dimensions and preferably rectangular in cross section.y This bar is straight throughout its' major portion but has one Vendv 11 curved and terminatingin an extensiond2- formed ory otherwise provided with a guide sleeve .13 arranged in parallel relation ntothe back or bar 10 `and having a preferably rectangular bore or opening 1,11 therethrough.v
Thenumeral 15 designates the handle which may be constructed of wood, as is l.generally customary, the handle being preferably slotted or bifurcated, as shown, so as to straddle the portion 11 of the frame, and rigid connection being effected-by, meanso'f ',bolts, screws or other securing elementsl,
it being understood, however, that such details as` these may be readily varied within the scope of the invention,
z" Carried by the back-or bar member llOisy l the front anchor 4member designated ask a whole by the numeral 17, this member being provided for the pur ose of, holding the forward end of the1 saw s lade 1S. l.The vmember 17 is representedas including an arm `19 having one end formed or'otherwise provided with a yokeQO slidable along the back or bar 10. so that the member 17 may be shifted bodily towardor fromthe handle depen-ding upon the length of the saw blade rto be-used. The member 17 is intendedV to lock in position witlirespect to the back or bar 10 i upon slight lateral rocking movementV with respect thereto, and kfor this reasonrit` 1s shown as equipped with a ulateral projectionory heel piece 21 adapted to bear againststhe inner or under edge of theback or bar 10. The end of the arm 19 remote from the bar .10 is provided with a lateral extension :22
which is preferably square in` cross section anduprovided on each flat fasce witha pinzor equivalent `projection 23 uponwhich may be engaged the hole 2li commonly provided at oneend ofthe hacksaw blade.
The means connected with therear end of` Vthe blade for maintaining proper tension thereon comprises apullbar 25 preferably Vsquare in ,cross section to prevent turning thereof and equipped on each face Ywith a pin at therear end of the blade. i In actual praetice the members 22 and 25 are preferably similar and it will be -quite apparentthat there are four possible positionsin which the blade may be mounted, depending upon the nature of the work to be done. Themelnber 25 slides through the square bore 14 in the" sleeve or guide box llfand has itsrear portion preferably bifurcated at 28, a roller 29 ybeing pivoted within thebifurcation.
Pivotally mounted in any suitable manner upon the extension l2, as showny at 30, is a loop-like hand-hold-31 constituting an actu- Iating lever andmovable within the space between the'bar 10, the extension V12 andthe end portion 11 and adapted to iit snugly againstthe inner or concave sideyof the lat- `member 25" longitudinally and thereby controllingv thetension on the blade. The location and shape of thecurved linger 32 are such that whenthe hand-hold 31 is in its operative position as shown in Figures 1 and 3, the active surface 33 of the finger will engage the roller 29 at a point past centerwth 301 respect to the pivotal mounting of the hand` hold so that after the blade has been placed under tension the pull of'the blade against the cam member 32 will act tohold the member 31 firmly against the inner edge of the end portion 11. The front portion of the loop shaped actuatin' lever 31 serves 'to protect the fingers of tthe operator, when the,v
device is in use. v
In the use of the device, it will be seen thatthe member 17 must ybe shifted along the back or bar 10 toa 'certain selected point depending upon the length of the Vsaw blade 18 to be used. The forward `end of the blade has thehole 24engaged upon a selected one of the pins or projections 23., The handhold 31 is then swung forwardly or away from the handle 15 into the position shown in Figure 2 and the hole 27 at the rear end ofthe blade is engaged upon the proper one of the pins The operator then may place the palm of his hand against the outer or rearsurface of the handle and vpass his fingers through the hand-hold or loop 31. By the simple act of closing the hand the member 31 will then be drawn toward and` into engagement with the end portion 11 of` the frame. Whenthis is done the concaveor active face .33 of the cam 32 will egage against the roller 29v and impart longitudinal movement to the member 25 and this will of course place the saw blade under tension.
.Whenever it is necessary to change a blade,
release is effected by forcing the member 31 forwardly into the positionshown in Figure 2. Obviously 4this may be done very simfinger 32 which ply by pulling upon it with the forefinger, though naturally there are no limitations as to the exact manner of operation chosen by the user.,
From the foregoing description and a i study of the drawing it will be seen that I have thus provided a simply constructed and Vvery quickly` and easily operated hacksaw frame which will hold saws of any length,
' within reasonable limits, with, absolute lirln-y -ness and-security.v It will be noted'that the saw blade may be placed in a plane with the back or at right angles thereto, with the saw teeth facing in a selecteddirection, there being four possible positions and, if-desired, the blade may be reversed to cut on a push stroke or a pull stroke. It is believed that the construction, operation and advantages will be readilyapparcnt to one skilled in the art without further explanation.
While I have shown and described apreferred embodiment of the invention, it should he understood that the disclosure is merely an exemplification of the principles involved as it is conceivable that various changes might be made to widen the field of utility and increase the adaptability of the device, and Iy reserve the right to make all variations and `modifications desired, provided they constitute no departure from the salient features of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. v
