Description

April 3, 1928. V
H.'S. C. BACON ADVERTISING DEVICE Filed April '7. 192""! u BY Q Patented Apr. 3, 1928 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY S. C. BACON, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 E. S. EDMOND- SON COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELA- WARE.
Application filed April 7,
My invention relates to a new and useful advertising device and more particularly to an advertising device which is foldable, stable, compact and durable.
The object of my invention is to provide means for portraying in relief, the object to be advertised and. providing such relief representation with a suitable supporting base, whose bottom area is rectilinear when unfolded, the whole devicebeing adapted to be folded for storage or shipment or when not in use to form arelatively thin package occupying a minimum space and one which canbe unfolded into the operative or effective position instantaneously with but a single operation, the folded base member's serving to protect the delineation ofthe article portrayed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a folding advertising device, whereby the advertisement proper, that is the relief representation of the object to be advertised is prominently displayed and assumes a vertical, or upright position with respect to the base when the device is in use and whereby the same is securely folded and protected from soiling or wear and tear, when the advertising device is not in actual use.
Still another object of my invention is to provide an advertising device which will permit of colored or black and white relief representation of the subject matter of the advertisement, and which at the same time can be produced from inexpensive material,
in large quantities at a time and without any my novel advertlsing device shown in the special skill.
My novel advertising device is particularly adapted for advertising articles over a wide range of territory for which purpose it is neccessary to employ a very large number of advertising cards of this character so that a large quantity may be produced at the same time at a minimum cost and whereby the cost of shipping or mailing such advertising devices, due to the light and compact character thereof, to the different localities where the same are to be used, is reduced to a minimum.
To the above ends, my invention consists of a pair of blanks which may be rectangular or of any suitable shape and size, and of any suitable, inexpensive material, such as card board or the like, the two juxtaposed ends of said blanks being creased along parallel lines ADVERTISING DEVICE.
1927. Serial No. 181,705.
at equal distances from the opposed edges thereof said creased portions-being formed into vertical or upright flanges, suitably sesaid vertical flanges so as to enable the outer portions of said blanksto either lie fiat to form a rectilinear base or to be folded upwardly on either side of, and against said centrally located, vertically projecting flanges, thereby completely enclosing the same, to provide a compact and durable folding advertising device having a delineation of the object to be advertised being cut out formed or portrayed in relief upon one or both sides of said vertically projecting centrally located flanges.
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawings one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1, represents a perspective View of open, operative position. 7
Figure 2, represents an end View of the same.
Figure 3, represents an end view of the device shown in Fig. 1, in the closed, folded or knocked down condition.
Referring to the drawings: 7
1 designates my novel advertising device, comprising the blanks or base members '2 and 3, creased or folded along the lines 4 and 5 respectively to form the vertically projecting, juxtaposed, innerwalls or flanges 6 and 7 which are secured to each other by cementing, gluing or any suitable means to form a vertically projecting double wall 8 extending the entire length of the blanks 2 and 3, as will be understood from Fig. 1, said wall having its edges cut or formed to portray the outside of the article advertised, and the outer surfaces of said wall 8 on either or both sides being colored to simulate the object or article advertised.
In forming the vertical flanges, which constitutes the wall 8, the blanks 2 and 3 are creased near their inner juxtaposed edges so that when the device is folded as seen in :F ig. 3 the vertically projecting contiguous flanges 6 and 7 suit-ably secured to each other to form the wall 8 will be completely enclosed by the folded base portions 2 and 3, as will be understood from Fig. 3.
The object to be advertised, as an automobile or any other device, symbol or emblem is cut out in relief from the upper portion of said vertical flanges leaving if desired a base portion 9 on which the device appears to be mounted or supported, which portion 9 may extend the entire length of the device. Obviously by cutting the contour of the object to be advertised from the body portion of said vertical flanges a double representation ofsuch object is produced, that is, a relief representation of the same is produced on either side ofsaid vertical wall 8, thereby addingto the effectiveness of the advertising device, since the object so advertised is thus rendered equally visible, to persons viewing the same in opposite directions, or from opposite sides, as will be understood from Figs. .1 and 2. WVhen the device is in the operative position, the blanks or base members 2 and 3 are in a horizontal rectilinear position and theobject advertised is prominently displayed and its visibility is not in any way obstructed. Furthermore, the relatively large blanks 2 and 3 forming the base of my novel :device, serve to provide a very stable support therefor thereby preventing the overbalancing or falling of the same. a
If desired the relief representation or opposed surfaces of the wall 8 or the object to be advertised may be suitable colored to emphasize the simulation of the article advertised or to show the actual colors emform the contour of such object with the aid of photograph, lithograph or printing,
thereby quickly and conveniently reproduc assemble and distribute, and extremely easy tooperate, since the same is unfolded in one operation and consists of durable, .and'ins expensive blanks of cardboard or the like, forming a unitary structure having a nnn1- mum number of parts, and occupying a minimum space, in storage and transportation, the device when unfolded being conveniently stood in self supporting position upon a counter, show case, desk or the like andprovides a simple, inexpensive, attractive and efiicient medium for theparticular' goods, merchandise or other device or thing distinctively appearing upon the vertical and horizontal display surfaces.
It will now be apparent that I have de vised anovel andusefulconstruction ofadvertising' device which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred enibodimentthereof which has been foundin practice to givesatisfactory and reliable results, 1t 1s to be understood that the same is susceptlble of modification'in various particulars without departing from the spirit" or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thusdescribed'my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ing a pair of rectilinear leaves forming in opened or display position a flat rectilinear base and arranged to be folded one upon the other. book-fashion in non-display position, the folding points of each leaf being creased and bent to form alongitudinal continuous,
'95 A device of the character stated, compris-.
relatively rigid flange throughout the entire length of each of the leaves, which in the open position of said leaves is self-supporting and is arranged at right angles thereto,
means for securing said flangestogether, and a representation of an article to be advertised extending from said flanges so as to be vertically positioned in the flat, opened position of said leaves, the latter when open extenda ing rectilinearly in every direction at right angles to and forming a stable support, for said flanges and thedisplay, said leaves being of greater area than said flange and its display, so as to enclose and protect the latter when said leaves are folded book-fashion.
