Description

Sept.`l8, 1928. l
H. nFRANTz CRUTCH ATTACHMENT Filed Dec, 8. 1927 z FIEL@ WITNESSES 32 Patented Sept. 18,Y i928.
rUN'E) 'STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CRUTCH ATTACHMENT.
Application led December 8, 1.927. Serial No. 238,669.
My invention relates tothat class of devices which are designed to provide means to keep the crutch i'rom slipping when Walking on ice or other slippery places, Which means may be retracted and brought out ol"l engagement with the ground or other surface walked upon.
Devices of this kind With Which I am familiar are too costly and complicated. My invention has for its object to provide a novel attachment which is simple and cheap.
My means oi accomplishing the foregoing may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings Which are hereunto attached and are a part et this specification, in which similar charac ters of rci''ercnce indicate corresponding` parts in all the figures.
Figure (l) is a side elevation of my inven tion attached to the end of a crutch.
Figure (2) is a vertical cross section of the sleeve and common rubber tip as they appear when attached to the end of a crutch.
Figure 3) is a side elevation of my errule.
Figure (a) is a side elevation of my sleeve.
Figure (5) is a plan view of the i'errule as seen in Figure Figure (G) is a plan View oit the sleeve as seen in Figure A represents the crutch. B the eX- treme end oi crutch that carries the rubber tip (4l), commonly used on all crutches.
The invention consists of a sleeve (1') and isequipped with a plurality of vertical bars (2), and cog-like teeth (3), on the bars (2) and a ferrule (7). This ferrule is equipped with a plurality of vertical pockets (8) and each pocket provided With a cog-like tooth (ll). These teeth` are at the top of pockets (S) and the Width of these teeth (ll) employ half the Width of pocket (8) as shown in Figure (5) To install and operate my invention first iit the sleeve (l) to the crutch A, to bear against the shoulders (5), then place the two screws or small brads through the holes (6). The rubber tip (Zt) Will then be onthe extreme end of B, making it unnecessary to shorten the crutch to install my invention.
The errule (7) can then slide over and up by pockets (8) provided, to vmember With the bars (2) raise until the center of sleeve (l) is reached, then one quarter inch turn tor the right and the cog-like teeth (ll) will cooperate v vith cog-like teeth (3) then drop the key (9) into top of pocket (8) and the ierrule is locked and .is ready to Walk on slippery places by using' inside bevel edge (l0). As the bottom of :terrule becomes Worn down Ytrom use and sharpening you can drop dovvn to a lower position.
JV hen Wishing to use the rubber tip (4l), pull out the key (9), turn one quarter inch Ato left and raise the Jr'errule (7) to top of sleeve (l), turn one qua-rter inch to right and drop in the hey (9) and this will bring the rubber tip (4) into use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire` to secure Letters Patent:
ln a crutch a sleeve adapted tobe fixed y to the foot of the crutch, said sleeve being provided with a plurality oi vertical tenons carrying' cog like teeth, a, terrule provided With a plurality oi radial pockets adapted to accommodate the tenons of the sleeve, said pockets each provided at its opening With a tooth, to cooperate, upon turning the errule and sleeve relatively with any desired one of the cog like teeth carried by the tenons.
