IMPROVEMENT IN BU TTON-FASTENINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,638, dated October 11, 1875 application filed September 17, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES H. HARRINGTON, of Providence, in the county ofProvidence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons, of which the following is a specification:

Figure 1 is a side View of my improved button, partly in section, to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the same, the head of the button being removed.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to furnish buttons which shall be so constructed that they may be attached to and detached from garments without sewing and ripping, and which shall be simple in construction, inexpensive in manufacture, convenient in use, and not liable to become accidentally decached.

The invention consists in the combination of the pivoted hook-eye and the spring with the back of a button, to adapt it to be secured to the garment by the insertion of the eye of another button or a ring in said hook-eye, as hereinafter fully described.

A represents the back of a button, which may be furnished with a head of any desired material, size, shape, or style. B is the eye of the button, which passes through a hole in the back A, and is pivoted to said back or to lugs attached to it. The outer part of the eye B is made in hook form, the point of said hook resting against the outer side of said back A. Upon the inner end of the eye B is formed a point to receive the end of a small spiral spring, 0, the other end of which rests against a point or hook attached to the said back A. Any suitable spring, 0, may be used, its form being immaterial. The hook-eye B is designed to receive the eye of another button, 1), or a ring, to secure it to the garment.

The button A BC may be worn upon the outside of the garment, and the button or ring D upon the inside, or it may be worn upon the inside of the garment, and the button 1) upon the outside.

In attaching the button the hook-eye B is passed through an eyelet-hole formed in the garment and the eye of the button I), ora ring is pressed against the point of the hook B, forcing it back and passing into the bend of the said hook, which hook is at once forced forward by the spring 0, and the fastening is completed.

Upon the outer side of bend of the hook-eye B is formed a small shoulder or notch, b, to receive the thumb-nail, to enable the said hookeye to be forced back to withdraw the button or ring D, and unfasten the buttou.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the pivoted hook-eye B and the spring 0, with the back A, of a button, to adapt it to be secured to the garment by the'insertion of the eye of another button or a ring in said hook-eye, substantially as herein shown and described.
