In order that substantially all oi the impurities may be removed from the pulp fiber it is necessary that means be pijpvided whereby a cleansing water may be `added thereto and the partially cleaned fibers thoroughly mixed therewith so that when the pulp is discharged from one screen to the next, a similar cleansing` process will tali place. Such a means is shown in `the drawings, particularly Figures l, 2, 3 and 6. As here shown, a pipe 2G, h ving a series ot clischarge nozzles 27 mounted therein, is arranged directly above each mining trough 9.2 and each pipe Q6 has one end connected to a feed pipe QS whereby water may be supplied thereto. Suitable valves 29 are inter posed in each pipe 2li whereby the supply ot water to the mixing' troughs 29. may be rerulated. The form ol apparatus shown in the drawings comprises three screens having the mixing troughs 22 arranoed therebetween as particularly shown in Figure l. Each mii:- in;r trough preferably comprises an inclined wall 3l to which the lower edges of the screens 7 and 8 are secured by means ot suitable cleats 3Q, and a bottom wall 83 to which the adjacent lower screen is similarly secured b v means ot the cleats 34. The discharge side of each trough 22 preferably consists of an overflow wall over which the watery pulp fibers are discharged onto the bottom wall 33 and thence through a relatively narrow opening or gap 36 provided beneath the splash-board 37. Sin'iilarly, the splash-board 87 is arranged comparatively close to the overflow wall 35 of the mixing trough so that as the material downwardly flows between the two walls it will be evenly distributed over the surface of the adjacent lower screen. From the lower mixing` bei: fibers will be discharged to the 9 and, as it downwardly travels over the suri'iace thereo'li, the major portion of the water contained therein will drain through the screen and be discharged to the lower inclined wall 39 arranged beneath the screen and from which it is discharged into a spout fil. .The water passing through the screen 9 fill be comparatively clean and may therefore be used over again. From the lower screen 9, the cleaned fibers will be discharged into a receiving` spout or trough si?, from whence it will be discharged into a suitable receivingmeans, not shown, for subsequent use in the manufacture of new paper stock.
A platform i3 is preferably arranged adjacent each screen 7. S and 9 and a staim 'ay 4A is preferably provided between each platform so that an attendant may conveniently reach any one of toe screens, should it be found necessary to clean them or in the case of repairs, and the like. The distributing pipe i6 is preiei'ably connected to the 'water feed pipe by means ot a pipe connection 4:5., having` a control valve 4:6 therein, so that should the pulp not have sufficient moisture to cause it to freely flow over the wall 2l of the receiving; box l5, additional water may be added thereto by opening the valve 4.16.
ln the operation of this novel apparatus, the pulp liber is discharged, in a watery state, into the receiving box or trough l5 adjacent the upper edge of the screen 7. From this trough it will overflow the wall 2l and pass between the narrow opening provided between the wall 21 and the silash-board 23, thence to the upper screen 7. is it downwardly travels over the surface of this screen a portion of the water contained therein will drain through the screen thereby carrying Q2, the pulp lower screen with it a portion ot the impurities contained l lli;
