HAT PROTECTOR.

The main object of this invention is to provide a protector for mens straw hats and felt hats as well as for ladies hats, ofy any shape or contour, for the purpose of preserving the hats'from being ruined by rain, snow or sleet.

Another object of this invention is to provide a hat pi'otector in combination with a hat, which latter has means-thereon for retaining` the protector in tautened position over the brim of the hat.

The above and otherobjects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the drawing.

Referring briefly to the drawing, Figure 1` is a perspective view of a. stiff straw hat, showing the hat protector, a portion thereof broken away, mounted thereon.

Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevational view of the hat, showing the hat protector tautening device secured in the hat.

Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 10 indicates the oval brim of a hat. This brim has an oval aperture therein into which the crown of the head fits. A hat crown 11 surmounts the brim and surrounds the opening. This crown is closed at its upper end by a roof 12. The structure, as herein outlined, is the general design of the conventional type of hat and is rarely modified. The

hat protector is adapted to cover all exposed surfaces of the crown, brim and roof of the hat. This protector comprises an oval wall 13 which coveis the crown of the'hat and has a top piece 14 integral therewith, which latter' covers the roof 12. Integral with the lower edge of the rim 13 of the hat protector is an outwardly projecting flange 15 which covers the upper surface of the brim of the hat. An extension 16 of this flange 15 covers the lower surface of the brim of the hat and, continuing, is folded into the confines of the crown. A resilient finger 17 may be provided in a modified form of device. This Aresilient finger is firmly secured intermediate its length to the underside of the roof member 12. The ends ofthe finger are free and are adapted to flex upwardly. This resilient finger has hooks 18 at its outer end and these hooks are secured to the hem portion 19 of that portion of mai terial 20 which folds into the crown of the hat. l

With this type -of hat protector'the entire exposed surfaeeuof the hat is protected from inclement weatli er, such as snow, sleet or rain and may also be used under conditions where the atmosphere is heavily laden with dust particles. To retain the flange 15 of the hat protector in flat position, so that it will not rumple, and to drain the waterv from an un# desirable position, the tautening device may be used. The ends of the resilient finger 17 flexupwardly and, as the hat protector in its entirely is preferably composed of some stretchable material, such as rubber cloth, will tauten the flange 15 and members 16 and 20, thus retaining` the fiange 15 flat, to enable Vthe rain or water to drip from *the edge of the fiange at the rear, as hats are normally tilted at a slight angle rearwardly.

It should be kept in mind that, in the event that I wish to make changesl in form or construction, these changes in form or construcf tion are not to be considered as departing from the spirit and scope ofthe invention.

I claim: i

1. In combination with a hat, a hat protector covering` the crown and brim of the'hat, said brim covering having an extension thereon covering the underside of the brim of the hat, said extension being greater in dimension than the width of the underside of the brim, the remainder of said extension being folded yinto thecrown of said hat, a resilient finger vsecured to the edge of said extension, said finger beingl adapted totauten said extension and said brim covering over the brim of the hat.

2. In combination with a hat, a hat protec-y hat, said extension being greater in dimension than the width of the undersideof the brim, the remainderof said extension being folded into the crown of said hat, a resilient finger secured to the edge of said extension, said. finger being adapted to tauten said eX- tension and said brim covering over the brim of the hat, said finger being adapted to normally fiex upwardly to exert a pull upon the edge of said extension. f
