Description
UNITED PATE OFFICE.
ROBERT R. OSGOOD, OF TROY, NE\V YORK, ASSIGNOR TO J. G. OSGOOD.
SHIP'S HAWsE-HOLE.
Specification of Letters Patent No, 17,228, dated May 5, 1857.
T 0 all lwlw/111, t may concer/1L V Be it known that I, ROBERT R. Osooon, of Troy, in Rensselaer county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hawse-Holes for Vessels and other Like Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the ac* companying drawing, through letters of reterence marked thereon, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figure l, represents a front View of my improved hawsehole, Fig. 2, a si'de levation, and Fig. 8a section taken on the line a, of'Fig. l. A
The saine letters of reference appearing in the several ligures indicate like parts.
The nature of my invention, consists in hanging the pulley on a rotating bed-plate, and connecting therewith a tubular guide, through which the rope or chain passeson, or oft, the pulley, and which, in yielding to the direction of the rope, causes the bedplate on which the pulley is supported to rotate in suoli manner, as to insure that the axis ofy the pulley, shallat all times be at right angles to the direction of the rope, on, or off, to prevent it chafing from riding on the edge of the pulley, or against the side of the hawsehole.
To enable others to makeand use my invention, I will describe its construction and operation in detail.
(A) represents a circular pla-te, so formed around its periphery, in 'connection with the plate or ianch (B) which surrounds it, that when the latter is bolted firm in its position, the former is also secured, but is capable of being rotated within it; on this plate (A), are two brackets (O), projecting at right angles to its face, between which, a pulley (D) is supported, on the axis an opening' is made between the brackets in the plate (A), to allow a rope to pass through over the top of the pulley.
(F) is a tube, the bore of which is slightly larger than the rope or chain intended `to be used, which is made bell shaped at the end, to prevent it from chafing the rope as it passes through, two side straps (I-I) are connected to this tube, by which it is hinged on the axis (E), which admits of it moving in the plane of motion of the pulley, while any side strain, caused by the direction of the rope on or off, as the case may be, is communicated by it to said axis, which rotates the plate (A) within the flanch (B), and thus insures the axis of the pulley, being at all times square to the direction of the rope.
The plate (A) may be constructed, with antifriction rollers around its periphery, on the face and edge, to insure its free action under heavy pressure, il found necessary; and the hinged tube, may be arranged on either side of the pulley, so as to act upon its axis by the varying direction of the rope, either in passing on to, or off of the pulley; or 'by using two pulleysI similarly arranged, they may be used on both sides. The applicability of this arrangement, to a great variety ot purposes, will be so appar ent, that it is deemed unnecessary to enumerate any of them here.
Having thus described my invention, what I cla-im as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is-
Supporting a pulley on a rotating bed, and combining' therewith a guide tube hinged on its axis for the rope to pass through, substantially as, and for the purposes herein set forth.`
In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand this 30th day of March 1857.
ROBERT R. OSGOOD.
