UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE WILLIAM A. HARWOOD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOLARS CQMPANIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 172,431, dated January 18, 1876; application filed December 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. HARWOOD, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Scholars Companion, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to provide for use of school children a pocket companion or case which shall possess the qualities of cheapness, lightness, strength, and capacity in the highest degree practicable to combine them along with a shape or form best adapted to enable it to withstand the rough treatment to which it will ordinarily be subjected in actual use, and to prevent rapid wear of the pocket in which the case is carried. To this end I construct the case as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved pocket-case with a part of the cover broken out. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a trans Verse section on the line :10 00. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a sliding cover having a measuringscale.
The body of the companion or box is formed of a single sheet of tin, or other thin metal, bent to form the rounded sides or edges B, the bottom'being nearly flat. The ends are formed of separate pieces 0 of conical or rounded forms, and elongated corresponding to the longer transverse diameter of the body,
as shown. They are fastened on said body so as to inclose its ends, and thus avoid the formation of a sharp angle or rough edge. The cover D, which is-a mere strip of tin with parallel edges, is fitted to slide forward and backward in the lengthwise direction of the box in grooves E. The ways or grooves for the cover, and the cover itself, are constructed so that the latter may be taken entirely from the box to be used as a paper-cutter. It may also be provided with a graduated scale, as shown in Fig. 4:, to adapt it for use as a lineal measure.
Constructed as described, so as to be oval in cross or longitudinal section, the case has the qualities alleged, and is adapted to fulfill all the requirements of such an article.
What I claim is- As an article of manufacture, the oval pocket-case formed of the body B with rounded sides, the conical elongated cap or end pieces 0 0 applied thereto, as described, and the sliding cover D forming one of the fiat or wider sides of the case, as shown and described.
WM. A. HARWOOD.
