Application filed June My present invention has reference to an improvement in a hinge hasp.
The primary object of the invention 1s the provision ot an extensible hasp of a nature and construction whereby the same will properly engage with the staple therefor, regardless oi the expansion and contraction of the door upon which the staple or the hasp is iixed.
A further object is the provision of a hinge hasp in which the normally fixed plate thereof is arranged for limited sliding movement in a suitable guide that is fixed on the supporting structure tor the hasp and wherein the outer staple engaging member ot the hasp has slidably and pivotally associated therewith a latching element of a novel construction that is movable through the staple, tor locking the hasp thereto.
To the attainment of t-he foregoing, the improvement consists in the invention as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, the numeral 1 designates the jamb or post tor a swinging door and the door is indicated by the numeral 2. My improvement is especially desirable for employmentV in connection with garages, but, ot' course, is not to be restricted to this particular use. Tn carrying out my invention T secure upon the inner face ot the structure 1 a cross sectionally U-shaped guide member 3. This member is ot substantially rectangular termation and is preferably formed from a single strip of metal which has its edges rounded to provide inner and outer parallel members or plates. These members or plates have each alining openings which are preferably arranged adjacent to the corners thereof, the openings el in the outer member being preterably larger than the openings in the inner member, and the openings in the inner member are reamed to receive the flared heads of screws 5 which, of course, are iirst inserted through the openings le The screws enter the structure 1.

trally formed with a longitudinal slot or opening 7, and passing through the guide 8 and through the opening l there is a bolt member 8 which also passes through the structure 1, the said bolt being engaged by a nut in the usual manner. By this arrangement it will be seen that the plate 6 is held from tilting but is longitudinally adjustable in the guide 3, such adjustment being limited by the contact of the bolt 8 with the end walls provit ed by the slot 7. This is an important .teature or the improvement as the same not only provides for the adjustment of the hasp on the structure 1 but permits oit the h asp being set in a suitable distance from the outer edge oit the jamb or structure 1.
The plate 6 has its outer edge termed with a central extension, the said extension being -rounded outwardly to provide ka 4barrel 9. The outer or swingable element of the hasp is indicated by the numeral 10, the same having its inner end centrally cut-away or bifurcated and the reduced portions thereof rounded inwardly to provide barrels 11 that receive the barrel 9 therebetween, a pivot pintle 12 passing through the alining barrels. By rounding the ends of the elements 6 and 10 ot the hasp in opposite directions it will be noted that the swingable or outer section 10 thereof is disposed a suitable distance away from the inner section 6, the distance being suiiicient to permit of the hasp resting against the plate ot a staple when this type .of staples are attached to the door 2.
ln the showing ot the drawings l have illustrated an ordinary U-shaped staple 13 whose pointed legs are forced through the door 2 and the upper ends ot the said legs are bent against the face of the door. The swingable section 10l ot the hasp is, of course, provided with the usual opening 11i to receive the staple 13 therethrough.
The swingable section 10 of the hasp is formed with a somewhat elongated longitudinally etxending centrally arranged opening 15 disposed a. distance inward from the transverse opening let. rThrough this opening there is passed a double headed rivet 16, or in lieu ot the rivet a headed bolt engaged by a nut may be employed. The element 16 is slidable in the opening 15 and passes through the inner end of a spring latch 17. The latch is formed with a strip of spring metal which is centrally bent upon itself and the inner element of the latch is tor a distance trom the rounded end thereof, rounded or bulged, as
at 18, toward the outer arm or element 19 ont the latch. The walls of the inner element ot the latch, at the ends of the rounded or hulged portion, exert a rict-ional engagement against the hasp section l0 so that the latch is held from free movement on the said hasp section 10. The latch may, however, be treelymoved through the hasp 13 or out of engagement with such hasp as when the door is to be locked or opened. The spring latch 17 may also loe swung on its pivot laterally with respect to the hasp section l0, when the latch is not desired for use.
The simplicity of my construction and the advantages thereoit will, it is thought, he understood and appreciated without further detailed description.
TNhile I have illustrated a satisfactory embodiment of my improved device my features of invention are capable ot extended applicaion and I do not wish to he limited to the precise structure herein shown and described.
Having described the invention, I claim:
' l. A hasp comprising two hinged sections, one ot which being mounted on a support and movable longitudinally 'for a determined distance on said support and the second section having an opening therethrough for the reception of a staple, and said last mentioned section' having a pivotally supported longitudinally movable spring catch thereon to engage with the staple.
2. The combination with a structureand a swingahle door tor closing and opening in such structure, ot a cross sectionally U-shaped guide xed on said structure, a holt member passing centrally through the guide, a hasp comprising two hinged sections, one of which being received in the guide and having a lon gitudinal slot therethrough, holt member passing through the guide, the slot and the structure for limiting the longitudinal movement ot the hasp section through the guide, the second section of the hasp having an open ing therethrough, a staple carried by the door, said second section having a longitudinal opening therethrough, a spring latch formed from a plate which is centrally bent upon itself and which has its inner element rounded outwardly so that the portions ot the inn-er element to the opposite sides of the rounded portion will trictionally contact with the hasp section, and a double headed pivot passing through the catch and through the longitudinal slot in the said hasp section.
