A Ponca swING AND LIKE DEVICE Filed Jan. 20, 1928v By UQ@- Patented Aug. 27, 1929.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM G. UHLIR, 0F HARVEY, ILLINOIS.
IORCH SWING AND LIKE DEVICE.
Application filed January 20, 1928. Serial No. 248,035.
My invention relates to porch swings and like devices.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simple, practical and eeetive construction of porch swing. y
Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of this kind which may be used advantageously and comfortably in different ways, as for example, a couch or lounge on which a person could recline, or a wide chair or swing in which movement could take place easily, or as a swing for several people with a separate portion or compartment for each.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a porch swing embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross section taken on line 24-2 in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section similar to Fig. 2 with a part of the device in adifferent position; and
Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 in Fig. 1. f
Referring to the drawings, I show a porch swing comprising a seat portion conveniently consisting of horizontal slats or pieces l, 1, a back having upright members or slats 2, 2 with a bottom 3 and top 4 and end arms having upright members or slats 5, 5 with a bottom 6 and top member 7 supporting arms 8.
Supporting chains 9, 9'for supporting` the swing are shown, these being understood to be extended upwardly and secured to an overhead support in any desired manner.
In accordance with my invention I provide an arm 10 located between the end arms 8, 8 preferably midway between same. This arm 10 is to divide the swing into two dif- Y ferent sections or compartments, although, if
desired, the swing could be made long.
enough to have more than two compartments and more than one arm 10.
The arm 10 is preferably mounted and arranged so that it can be placed in substantially horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and also placed in substantially vertical or upright position, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. lith the arm in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the swing will be in effect divided into two separate compartments or portions for two different persons and each one will have arms on both sides, which are desirable under certain circumstances, particularly where the swing is swung back and forth and it is desired to be able to hold on to it with'both hands. lilith the arm in its upright position, as shown in ference or inconvenience of an intermediate y arm.
Preferably the arrangement by which this arm 10 may be moved into different positions is such as to permit the arm to be placed practically against the two small' separated upright members 14 which are immediately behind it, so that it may liev substantially against those members and not make an i111-, comfortable forward projection and be thus fully out of the way. Also, it is desired to have the movable arm in a position, when down, corresponding substantially to the position of the other arms 8, 8.
As an arrangement 'for' accomplishing these desired results and also giving an` advantageous and strong construction, the arm 10 is pivotally connected as by a strap hinge 11, with a swinging member 12 or link, which in turn is pivotally connected by a pivot 13 with the lower portions of upright members 14, 14. Also the arm 10 is provided with a brace or extension 15 which is provided with a transverse pin 16 which is arranged to slide in grooves or recesses 17 in the central upright members 14. Thus,
4the armi() may be swung into substantially upright and also substantially horizontal positions by means of these jointed swinging mountings. At any rate, it may -be swung into and out of operative position.
It is desirable that the arm member 10 may fold against the back, when not in use as a rest, with minimum protrusion, and to this end the members 12 and 15 are made of such width as may be accommodated in the space between the two members 14 so f that these members, 12, 14 and 15 will be in substantially the same plane as the slats 2. Thus vthe arm10 when so placed will project beyond this plane only to the extent of its own thickness. The length of this member 1() is so designed that it will eX tend when so folded, between the two back members 3v and 4, that is, above and below them respectively and in the same plane therewith.
Fordetermining the downward position of the arm 10, the swinging member or link 12 is attached as stated by the 'strap-hinge of the arm 1Q and the'members 14, the under side of the arm is chamfered so that the top surface may hug closely whilev the bottom surface thus being relieved will not bind against the members 14 in passing.` It will be noted that the member 10 is of sufficient width to extend across the two members 14 thus forming a neat closure for the parts. Vhen extended the arm will bea-r against the face of the members 14 while the pin 16 bears against the edge of the grooves 17,
`.thus producing a substantial and rigid con` nection thereat.- j
As a manufacturing expedient the grooves 17 of the members 14 extend to, and open out at the ends of these members and the zbrace 15 having the pin 1G assembled in po sition therethrough and projecting on each side thereof for engagement of the said grooves, and before the vbrace is attached to the arm 10 it is lodged between the members 14 and the projecting ends of the pin 16 may then be introduced in the grooves 17, thereafter the brace 15 may be secured to the arm 10 in any desirable manner as for instance by the bolts 15a-15, taking through both members l() and 15 as shown.
It will be understood that the invention may be applied-to other forms of devices, such as seats, benches, etc.
It will be understood that changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a support consisting of a pair of substantially vertical separa-ted channel pieces supported on said frame and having their channels face ing each other, an arm rest member wider than the space separating the two channel pieces and having a brace on the underside of its inner end of a Width less than the distance between the channels and with a pin projecting through and from the end of the brace into the channels, and a link also of less width than the space between the channel pieces pivoted at its lower end between the channel pieces andjhaving its upper end hinged to the arm rest member toward the center thereof so that when the arm rest is folded up, the brace and link will lie between the channel pieces.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a frame, of a support consisting of a pair of substantially vertical separated channel pieces supported on said 'frame and having their channels facing each per end hinged to the support member toward the center thereof so that when the support member is folded up, the brace and the link will lie between the channel pieces, the end of the brace being beveled so that it rests against the contiguous surface of the link when the arm rest is extended.
3.y In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a support consisting of a pair of substantially vertical separated channel pieces supported on said frame and having their channels facing each other, an arm rest member wider than the two channel pieces and the spaceseparating them and having a brace bolted to the underside of its inner end of a width less than the distance between the channels and with a pin at the end of the brace extending into the channels, and a link also of less width than the space between the channel piecesl pivoted at its lower end between the channel pieces and having its upper end hinged to the arm rest member toward the center thereof so thatwhen the arm rest member is folded up, the brace and the link will lie between the channel pieces, the end of the brace being beveled so that it rests against the contiguous surface of the link when the arm rest is extended, and the hinged end of the link likewise being beveled so that its beveled end engages the underside of and supports the arm rest in extended position.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination with a frame, of a support consisting of a pair of substantially vertical separated channel pieces supported on said.
frame and having their channels facing each other, an arm rest wider than the two channel pieces and the space separating them and having a brace on the underside of its inner end of a width less than the distance between thevchannels and with a pin projecting through and from the end of the brace into the channels, and a link also of less width than the space between the channel pieces pivoted at its lower end between the channel pieces and having its upper end hinged to the arm rest toward the center thereof so that when the arm rest is folded up, the brace and the link will lie between the channel pieces, the point of connection of the link with the arm rest being at a distance from the front end of the arm rest substantially equal to the length of the link. 5. In a seat, the combination With a seat frame, of a back frame consisting of vertical 5 end pieces secured to said seat frame and top and bottom cross pieces secured thereto and back rest pieces connected to said top and bottom cross pieces, and an intermediate foldable arm-rest consisting of a pair of l0 spaced parallel channel pieces Secured to the back frame, said pieces having the channels therein facing each other and extending to and opening at their eXtreme upper ends; a brace and an arm rest removably attached together; a cross pin near one end of said brace, said brace arranged to occupy the space between the channel pieces, the said pin, taking through and extending from the said brace arranged tobe guided in said channel.
In Witness whereof7 I hereunto subscribe my name this 16th day of January A.' D.,
