Description

\ w. B. CHAMBERS.
INSTRUMENTS FOR. nnmm HOGS. No.176,597. Patented April 25, 1876.
WITNESSES I JV VEN TOR UNITED STATES WILLIAM BTOHAMBERS, OF DECATUR, ILLINOIS.
PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN INSTRUMENTS FOR RINGING HOGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 176,597, dated April 25, 1876 application filed April 6, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. CHAM- BERS, of Decatur, in the county of Macon and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hog-Ringing Nippers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of hogringers or hog-ringing nip'pers which are used to insert the double ring in the hogs nose; and the nature of my invention consists in providing the lower jaw of the nippers with upward-projecting points to support the ring and prevent the same from spreading when inserting in place.
In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side view of a hog-ringer embodying 'my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the upper jaw, and Fig. 3 is a similar view of the lower jaw.
A represents the upper jaw, and B the lower jaw, formed respectively upon the front ends of two handles, 0 and O, which are pivoted together at a, in the usual manner. The upper jaw A is formed with side flanges b b,
and a grooved lip, 01, along the outer edge, the same as in some hog-ringers now in use. The lower jaw B is also constructed the same as usual in this class of devices, and made shorter than the upper jaw.
At the outer end, on each side of the lower jaw B, is formed a point or lug, 2', which projects upward, as shown. These points i i are formed of the same piece of metal with the jaw, and are upon the extreme end of the same, and they support the ring and prevent it from spreading out when inserting in the hogs nose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a hog-ringer, composed of two jaws with handles pivoted together, the upward-projecting points i i formed at the extreme end of one of the jaws, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th of March, 1875.
WILLIAM B. CHAMBERS.
