I 14 2 ZWwwzZ .]wuq Y lemmas EDWARD S. YOUNG, OF GENEVA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN HASP-LOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1773 12, dated May 9, 1876; application filed February 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD S. YOUNG,
of Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Hasp and Padlock, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents an exterior view of my improved 3 a similar View, showing the position of the various parts when the bolt is shot and secured by means of the lock.
A is the casing,'inclosing and supporting the bolt and locking devices, and provided, when it is to be used as a hasp,'with a shank, B, of suitable length, secured in any suitable or preferred way to the door jamb or wall. The casing A is provided with a removablecap, A, perfcrated.'as shown, for'the admission of the key, through which is operated the lock, and having a recessed edge to correspond with the portion A, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The casing A is formed of a disk, a, deeply iecessed at b, on the side on which the bolt operates, for the purpose of admitting the staple, to which it may be desired to secure it, and bounded with acylindrical rim, 0, of a width to form a suitable box or case for the bolt and look. This cylindrical rim is continuous except at the recess 1). A slot, 01, at one side of this recess permits a pin or rivet, 6, provided with a thumbpiece on the outside of the rim c,-and on the inside secured in an arc-formed bolt, f, to play backward and forward a sufficient distance to shoot out the bolt and again withdraw it. A shield, g, fitting closely upon the cylindrical surface of the rim, keeps the slot d continually closed against dirt and water.
I further secure the complete inelosure of the lock, so as not to interfere with the free operation of the bolt, by meansof the irregularly bent metal piece h, which corresponds in width to the width of the rim, and is bent and placed first to form a recess 13, into which the bolt f shoots across the recess 1), then to conform to the'inner end of the recess 11,- and .the remaining portion made concentric with the cylindrical rim, and forming a tight shield against dirt and water, and a support and guide for the bolt f. When the cap A is placed upon the casing A the whole forms a completely-inclosing case for all the parts. The key-hole in the cap can be closed by any suitable meansas, for example, a pivoted slide' The casing A is further provided with a shank, B, perforated atthe end, which is useful when the lock is to be permanently attached to the door, gate, or post.
The bolt f may be formed with a recess, is, in its inner side and end, for the purpose of receiving the end of the bolt j of the look as it is shot forwardby the key; or it may simply be made short enough to permit the end of said boltj to shoot past it. In either manner the bolt f, when shot forward and secured by means of the lock-bolt forms a secure fastening, accessible only through the lock itself. This lock on I shall not particularly describe, as such forms no part ofmy invention, except in combination, and as any improved form of lock, placed in the same relation to the bolt f, may be used in its stead.
It is obvious that the boltf may be slid forward and not locked, and so the device he used simply as a temporary fastening for a gate or door, and that the shank B, which is formed upon the casing A, may be dispensed with.
I claim as 'of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with cylindrical casing A, formed witha recess, 1), in one side, and a recess for receiving the bolt, of curved bolt f, moving back and forth in curved guides, and provided with thumb-piece and shield g, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD S. YOUNG.
