This invention relates to the manufacture of armatures for dynamo electric machines, and particularly to the type of manufacture in which an armature core is first assembled upon ashaft, windings are assembled on the armature core, a previously formed commutator is press-fitted on the shaft, and the leads of the armature conductors are attached to the commutator segments.
One object of the present invention is to provide apparatus for quickly removing the commutator from an assembled armature. The apparatus is particularly useful in case the armature has been found defective because of short circuit and must be disacsembled.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the following description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawingsfwherein a pre ferred form of embodiment of the present invention is clearly shown.

The apparatus comprises mainly a device for supporting an assembled armature and for providin for its longitudinal movement, means for gripping the commutator and holding it stationary while the assembly of armature shaft, core and winding is being moved en-dwise andmeans engageable with the end of the armature shaft for moving the same relative to the commutator so that the commutator may be stripped from the shaft. In the disclosed form of the present invention the last named means is a plunger operated by an arbor press which comprises a frame 20 providing a base 21 and atubular Serial No. 236,460.
guide 22 which guides a rack 23 cooperating with a gear 24 attached to a shaft 25 operated by a handle 26. The rack 23 carries a plunger 2? for engaging the upper end of an armature shaft 28 upon which are assembled a core 29, windings 30, and a commutator 31. The armature assembly is received by a recess 32 in a block 33 which supports for vertically sliding movement a plate 34 having extensions 35 and 36 received by channels 37 and 38 respectively provided by the block The plate 34 is provided with a notch 39 for receiving the lower end of the armature shaft 28. The plate 3a is supported by springs 40 resting at their lower ends in tubes L1 which are fastened to a plate 42 which, together with a base -13 and blocks 4% and 45 are secured to the block 33 by bolts 46. The upper ends of the springs 1-0 are located by being placed around lugs 47 provided by the plate 34.
The means for gripping the commutator and holding it stationary while the shaft is mover downwardly comprises gripping aws 50 having teeth 51 pointingupwardly and having shanks 52 which are guided for vertical and horizontalmovement by channels 53 provided in the block 33. These channels are coveredby cover-plates 54. The shanks 52 are attached to rods 55 which extend through holes 56 in the plate 34 and which are threaded at their lower ends to receive nuts 57 which support springs 58, located between the nuts 57 and the plate 3%. The gripping jaws 50 are provided with inclined camming surfaces 60 which are engaged by corresponding cumming surfaces 61 of the plates 54.
To use the apparatus the operator will place an armature as embly upon the plate at as shown in Fig. 2. As the plunger 27 of the arbor press is lowered by turning the iandle 26 clockwise as viewed in Fig. l the plate 3- 1 which supports the armature assembly will move downwardly compressing the springs 40 and transmitting downward motion through the springs 58 to the grippin jaws 50. As the grippingjaws 50 move downwardly they will be cammedinwardly toward the commutator 31 due to the cooperation of the surfaces 60 and 61. ' After the plate 34 is movedinto the position shown in Fig. 4 the latches and 66 will retain the plate so that theoperator may withdraw the armatureassembly from which the commutator has stripped. To restore the "apparatus to the position shown in Figs. 1"
and 2 the pins 70 are moved away from the centralpart of the apparatus by operating levers 72 which are pivotally supported by the plate le and are adapted each to engage one ofthe pins 70. When, the levers 72 have been moved sufficiently to retract the latches 65 and 66 fro'm'the plate 3%, the
