Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. HAMMOND, OF JONESVILLE, MICHIGAN.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WM. M. HAMMOND, of t-he village of Jonesville, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a top view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sect-ion on x Fig. 3 is a vertical section on g/ y. Fig. 4 is a view of under surface of disk rubber. Fig. 5 is a plan view of tub with rubber removed, ls)hwing balls which constitute the clothing Similar characters of reference in the several figures denote the same part.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a system of loose balls sufliciently heavy to prevent their fioating, as a bed for the reception of the clothing, and using in combination therewith a cellular disk rubber, the construction and operation being substantially as hereinafter set forth.
L is a lever across the top.
A, A, are round balls which prevent the Wear and tear of the clothes; F, F, a reciprocating follower or rubber.
C, C, are concavities in the lower side of follower; P, a post in the top of follower; H, a handle; I, an iron pivot which works in a corresponding socket in the lever L; E, an iron strap, which is fastened to t-he side of t-he tub to which the lever L is attached 18,045, dated August 25, 185'?.
by means of a pivot or hinge; S a strap or stirrup.
The operation of the machine is as follows: The clothes are thrown promiscuously into the tub Fig. l, it being supplied with hot water, &c. The clothes are pressed down upon the balls (A, A,) with the foot of the operator by means of the stirrup S, when the follower F, F, is made to rotate by the use of the handle The clothes are subj ected to a constantly rolling pressure without the usual liability of wear and tear.
I do not claim either the tub or reciprocating follower, to be any part of my invention, since they have been used, as in Wisners and other improvement-s (patent). Neither do I claim anything of the nature of floating balls, as the balls in my improvement, practically, do not ioat and should be made of some heavy material; nor do I claim anything like rollers, conical or otherwise, requiring pivots upon which to turn; for the reason that the balls are a marked improvement, having no pivot either to rust or wear out or to injure the clothes. But
What I do claim, and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bed formed of loose weighted balls, covering the tub bottom, in combination with the cellular disk rubber, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
WM. M. HAMMOND.
