Description

C. S. CURRIE.
GATE-LATCH.
Patented Aug. 8, 1876.
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. OURRIE, OF CALDWELL, OHIO.
lMPROVEMENT IN GATE-LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 180,754, dated August 8, 1876; application filed July 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. GURRIE, ofOaldwel], Noble county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Gate-Latch, of which -the following is a specification provide for the sagging of the gate. Fig. 2
is a perspective view of a gate with my latch attached, a portion of the gate being broken away to show its construction and arrangement. Fig. 3 is a link which connects the latch to the lever, by which it is drawn in in opening. Fig. 4 is an elevation, showing the manner in which it is attached to the frame of the gate.
A is the frame of a gate; B, the post against which the gate swings in shutting. (J O O are palings of the gate and fence; E, the latch, pivoted in its support F at H, being pressed into a slot in the post of the fence by the spring S. The lever L in Fig. 2 is pivoted at P; but for convenience in opening a carriage-way gate upon horseback, the lever may be pivoted at T, as represented in Fig. 6.
The gate is now opened as follows: Placing the hand upon the lever L, Fig. 2 or Fig. 6, and moving it to the right, the latch E is drawn in and the gate swung open. In closing the gate the latch is pressed in by its contact with the picket or post of the fence, the link D sliding on the screw 01 without moving the lever L.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The horizontal latch E, bearing a loop at one end, to receive the link D, and pivoted at the other end in the keeper F, and pressed by the spring S, in combination with the link D and lever L, whether the lever be pivoted at the lower end, as in Fig. 2, or near the center, as in Fig. 6, all of which are attached to the gate, substantially as set forth in the drawings and specification.
CHARLES S. OURRIE. Witnesses:
