IMPROVEMENT IN HANGINGS FOR SLIDING- AND SWINGING GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,585, dated August 29, 1876; application filed April 5, 1876.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID MoOURDY, of Ottawa, in the county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Hangings for Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive means for hanging a farm-gate in such a manner that it will slide on a roller until nearly equipoised, when .it can be swung open, the gate swinging upon the single roller, no hinges being required.
The invention consists in the peculiar con- I struction and combination of a bracket, a
roller, and a guard, in connection with the heel-post ot' the gateway.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the closed Fig. 2 is a similar view of the open gate. Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section through the heel-post and roller, the parts being constructed as applied in use.
In the drawing, A represents a gate, whose top bar A is extended to slide between the head-post B and a guard-plate, B, secured to its face. The ends of the horizontal bars of the gate are extended so as to slide between the head-post and its guard plate. 0 is the heel-post, to the face of which, near the top thereof, is bolted a metal bracket, D, having stops at a at top and bottom, in line with the side of the post next the gateway. D is a roller, journaled by a bolt, 12, in the axis of about one-halt'its length, or nearly equipoised,
when it may be swung parallel with the roadway until arrested by the stops at and guardplate D v To prevent animals from pushing in the heel of the gate at the bottom an eyebolt, E, is screwed diagonally between the two lower bars into the face of the heel-post, and a vertical toggle-pin, c, driven throughthe eye of the bolt, as shown; but a short post driven into the ground under the hanging will answer the same purpose.
What I claim as my invention is The bracket D, roller D and guard plate D secured together by the bolt 12, in combination with the heel-post of a gateway, for hanging a gate thereto, substantially as described. A
