UNE-rsu STATES ea'rrixrr orifice WILLIAM F. GREMEAN, OF TQLEDCM OHIO DUSTGUARI) Application filed March 11, 1929; Serial' No. 346,165.
My invention relates to new and useful Figure 3 is a sectional View taken on line improvements indust guards for the jour- 3-3 of Figure l on an enlarged scale; nal boxes of raiivay cars and has for an` Figure 4 is a sectional View taken on line object to, provide a dust guard that willi fit 4&4 of Figure l; 5 closely around the dust guard bearing ot Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line the axle to exclude the dust and prevent of Figure l; the escape of oil and waste. Figure 6 is a sectional Viewl taken on line One of the objects ofthe present invention 6-6 ofFigure l. y is to provide a dust guard that will be ex- Referring now to the several views and 10 tremely light in weight and otlieieut in Figure l in particular, it will be seen that Servceh my iinproved dust guard consists of a sheet Still another object; of the inventien is to lnctat plate l having the outstanding flanges provide a dust guard comp-rising a metal 2 the sides. The bottom of the plato holder orframe, in which there is placed! is. rounded, as at 3, while the top 4 is flat l5 a ring, which in turn is formed with a pliacross its entire width. rlhe top. of the 3g able material, such as lainp wicking or cetplate is provided with the oifset flange 5, ton webbing securely heldin a metal backwhile its edge 6 is slightly curled, as may ing. besee-n in Figures 1 and 2.
Still another object; ofthe invention is to It will also be seen that there is the smallr 2o provide a dust guard formed off relatively flange 7' at the bottom with the slightly thin sheet metal, in which there is a wiclr curled edge Si, thus the edge 8 and the top crimped i-n a` metal backing, which wick 6 ofthe flange 5l being in the same vertical with its metal backing may easily be replane, sothatz when the dust guardv is placed moved from the plateand a new` one inin the dust box (not shown), it will bear 25 sorted when necessary., against the opposite walls of the same from 1p. Sti-ll anotherI object ofthe invention is to the main pla/teI I. provide a dust guard comprising a plate, The central portion of the plate l is cut in which there tits the renewable wick, the out, as at 9, the-opening being slightly larger said ring being broken at its upper porthan the circumference of the car axle (not '3o tion and fitting within a small removable shown). bearing block, which 1n turn may rest on About the wall ot the circular opening` the axle in the Journal box. 9, there will be seen; the pressed ribl 10,
till another object of the invention is to which extends from the point ll near the provide a dust guard that is extremely cheap top of the plate around to the point 12, or ai: to manufacture and wherein the ring wick in other words, the rib, nearly circ-umscr-ibmay be easily renewed and the metal plate ingthe opening. itself` be used indefinitely. There is a slight circular space 13 belVith these and other objects in view, tween the rib l() and the edge of the periphthe invention consists in certain new and eral wall of the opening 9, which, ispa-rtiv 41'?. novel arrangements and combination oi cutout to form lips in staggered relation, parts as will be hereinafter more fully deas maybe seen in Figure l and the several scribed and pointed out in the claims. sectional views.
Referring now to the drawings showing Referring for the moment to Figure 5 a preferred embodiment, which is av section on line 5-5 of Figure l,
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved it will be seen that the peripheral edge 14 dust guard showing the wick ring in posiat this point. is in the normal plane of the tion; plate. However, the meta-l' is then slit or cut,
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on line as at l5 and I6, to form the lug or lip 17,
2 2 and looking in the direction of the as may be seen in Figure 6, and. this metal 5^@ arrows, but with the Wick removed; ispressedv inwardly, as viewed from Figure lit-e 2 or, in other words, is offset from the part 14 to form a retaining lip.
There are a number of these lips formed in the same Way, such as 18, 19, 20 and 21, the metal left inthe Original plane also forming retaining lips, alternately thereof.
Now at the top of the circular opening, the metal is cutand offset to form two lips 22 and 23, while the central section 24: between" these two lugs is offset slightly in the oppof site direction, as may be seen at 25, (see Figure 4) the purpose of these three lugs being to receive and hold a small bearing block` Y shown) having a large central opening, togetherV Now this crimp metal ring 28 has its ends fitting Within the opposite notched ends of the bearing block 26, While the metal ring fits under the lips 17, 18, etc., and also bears against the remaining staggered lips that are formed between the lips 17, 18, etc., and is thus tightly held in place. The small bearing block holds these ends of the split ring together and will rest and bear on the aXle (not shown). Y
Any time thatit is desired to put in a new bearing block, ring or Wick, it is a simple matter, when the axle of course is out of the journal box to slip the old ring or bearing block from out of the lips and put 'a new one in its place. Y Y
From the foregoing, it will be seen that l have produced a metal dust guard that isY extremely cheap to manufacture, as the plate itself may be quickly stamped out by the proper dies, while the small metal ring with the wick maybe madeon a'crimping machine that has been fitted up for theV purpose and of course the small bearingblocks may be made at a minor expense.' Y
Thus, the entire dust guard maybe made at a very economical price and the crimped ring with the wick. may be renewed at a cheap price and the dust guard'plate used indelinitely. l
Many slight changes might be made without in any way departing from the spiritY and scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what y I claim 1s new and desire to secure by'Letters Patent is Y 1. A dust guard formed of a metal sheet with a iXedly held split metal ring having an axle engaging member associated ytherewith, integral means about the opening for holding the ring in position, and plug means having its ends notched and located vertically centrally of the opening and adapted to rest on the aXle and receive the ends of the split ring. Y
2. A dust guard formed of a metal sheet having a large central opening, a wick having a metal backing crimped thereto and the wick and backing formed into a split ring the ends of which are substantially spaced `from each other, the walls about the Yopening of the dust guard cut to form lips for engaging the metal backing of the split ring and for holding the said ring tightly lin position andv against rotation, mea-ns formed at the top of the opening for removably holding an axle bearing plug a plug having notched ends carried by said means and the ends of the metal backing oi' the ring ammed within the notched ends of the plug to thereby complete the splitring.
3. A dust guard formed of a metal sheet having a large central opening, a pressed groove around the peripheral wall of the opening and terminating short of a median line, the walls about the opening being split and bent to-form staggered lips and a pocket formed at the top of the opening and positioned between the ends of the said reinforcing groove a plug having notched ends fitting in said pocket and adapted to bear against an axle and a wick in the form of a split ring and having its outer edge crimped within a metal backing, the Wick and the metal backing held within the lips about the opening of the plate and the metal ends of the split ring fitting Within the notched ends of theplug.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signa-
