LORENZ STOEHR, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOB TO MGKEE 8n BROTHERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN MANUFACTURE OF HANDLED LAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,242, dated September 12, 1876; application filed August 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ,LORENZ SToEHR, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manufacture of Handled Lamps; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being'had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked ther on, making a part of this specification. l
The nature of my invention consists in an improved process for making hand-lamps, and other articles of glassware with handles, by pressing the foot and handle in one piece, the upper part of the handle being disconnected from the foot, and then blowing the body of the lamp or other article onto the same, thereby forming a connection between the disconnected part of the handle and the base, as willbe hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe how my process may be carried out, re-
i fering to the annexed drawing, in which- Figures 1 and 2 show the molds used. for manufacturing a handled lamp by my process. Fig. 3 is a section of the lamp, in which I have shown the bowl separate from the base and handle, though the bowl is never made separate, but blown to and united with the base and handle.
A represents the foot, and B the handle, of alamp. These are made together by pressing in a mold, O, the pressure on plunger D striking the bottom of the foot, and a puntyplate, E, is used in suchmold, as shown in Fig. 2, said punty-plate being similar in shape to the body of the lamp. After the foot and handle-are thus made this piece is taken to another mold, G, which has a recess, a, to receive the handle, and in which the body H is blown onto the foot and handle, thereby forming a connection between the disconnected part of the handle and the base of the lamp, and. making the lamp complete, excepting the collar, burner, &c.
By this means a handsome article can be made for less money, and the trade can be supplied with pressed-handle lamp superior to anything in the market, both in regard to appearance and size of handle, and also a more durable lamp than the blown or stuck handle ones.
Any other articles that are to have handles maybe made in the same manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- V The process herein described for making handled lamps, and other articles of glassware having handles, by pressing the foot and handle in one piece, the latter being disconnected at one end from the foot, and then blowing the body of the lamp or other article onto the same, thereby forming a connection between the disconnected end of the handle and the base, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 29th day of LORENZ STOEHR.
. July, 1876.
