Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings represents a top view of the device, Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view and Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the method of fastening the razor blade to thegrinding device.
The grinding device comprises a pair of rods 1 and 1 which are connected to end plates 2 in a parallel position. The rods are of angular, preferably square cross-section, and they are twisted so as to form screws. Grinding rollers 4 and 4 are arranged on the rods by means of apertures of the same shape as the cross-section of the" rods. Therefore when the rollers are axially moved on the rods, they will be rotated by the latter. The rollers are preferably enclosed in a frame 3 whereby they can be reciprocated and rotated respectively on the rods. The razor blade .6 is connected to a flexible metal strip 5 which is provided between the rods and which is parallel to them and secured to the plates 2. The connection of the blade'to the strip may be effected by means of a blade spring 7 the ends of which are inserted into elongated holes of the strip 5 and into the blade apertures, the tendency of the spring to straighten out being utilized for clamping the blade to the strip, as is evident from Fig. 4. Oblique wings or projections 8 on the frame form guide and turning elements which, when the frame being reciprocated on V the rods, engage the ends of the blade and turn it, twisting the flexible supporting strip into an oblique position wherein the blade is tangential to both rollers, as shown in Fig. 3. The guide elements are arranged so as to reverse the position of the blade at each change in the direction of movement. The edges of the blade are held by the torsional stress of the strip againstthe rollers as the latter pass when they are rotated by moving the frame and an efiicient grinding of the blade will take place.
-After the rollers have reached the end of the blade, the latter is impelled by the tension of the strip '5 to return in the normal positlOIL' If the frame is displaced in the opposite direction, the grinding happens also in the opposite direction-and on the other side of the edges of the blade, as the razor blade is brought again in an oblique position by the wings 8 or 8.
What I claim is:
1. A blade sharpening device comprising a main frame including a pair of parallel twisted rods, a roller mounted to rotate on each twisted rod, a guide frame mounted on the rods to move with the rollers on the twisted rods, a flexible strip for holding a blade, said strip being mounted on the main frame intermediate the parallel twisted rods, the guide frame having cams which contact with the blade to twist the flexible strip and present the edges of the blade to the rollers when said guide frame is reciprocated on the rods.
2. A blade sharpener comprising a pair of sharpening elements, means for mounting the sharpening elements for rotation when said elements are reciprocated, a flexible strip intermediate the sharpening elements, means on said strip for holding a blade, and means associated with the sharpening elements to twist the flexible strip and thereby present opposite side edges of the blade to the re spective sharpening elements when the latter are reciprocated.
3. A blade sharpener comprising a pair of twisted rods, plates connecting the ends of the rods, a sharpening roller mounted on each twisted rod, a frame slidably mounted on the twisted rods and embracing-the sharpenin g rollers, oppositely inclined cams on each side of the guide frame, means for resiliently mounting a razor blade between the twisted rods, the cams being in the path of the opposite edges of the blade to tilt same to present opposite edges of said blade to the sharpening rollers when the sharpening rollers are reciprocated past the blade.
4. A blade sharpener comprising a pair of spaced apart sharpening rollers, a flexible strip interposed between the sharpening rollers, said strip having openings, resilient blade holding means in said openings, and means associated with the sharpening rollers to twist the resilient strip and present the edges of the blade to the sharpening rollers when the latter are reciproeated.
