Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,887, dated November 28, 1876; application filed September 26, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS AUSTIN MIL- LEN, of Lambertville, in the county of Hunterdon and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Interfering-Rings for Horses, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 represents a side view of my interfering-ring as applied to the leg of a horse. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan on a larger scale than the previous figure.

This invention consists in an interferingring composed of a spiral strip of indie-rubber or other soft and elastic material, which extends round a strap provided with a buckle or other suitable fastening device, said spiral strip being provided with a ring at one or at both ends, so that, by means of said strap, the article can be readily secured in the desired position, and, by the ring or rings at the ends, the buckle or fastening device can be concealed, and thereby the effect of the interfering-ring is preserved, whatever may be the position of the same'on the leg of the horse.

In the drawing, the letter A designates my interfering-ring, which is composed of a spiral strip,a, of india-rubber or other soft and elastic material, and of a strap, b, of leather or other suitable material, that extends through said spiral strip,and is provided with abuckle, c, or with any other suitable fastening device, for the purpose of securing the ring on the leg of a horse, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

I am aware that an interfering-fin g has heretofore been made which is composed of a series of detached hollow spheres of india-rubber strung on a strap which serves to fasten the same on the leg of a horse.

This device is expensive to make, since each of the hollow spheres has to be molded separately; and it has also another disadvantage,

namely, the buckle or fastening device is left exposed, and, if the interfering-ring turns round on the leg of the horse, its effect is impaired or lost entirely.

My spiral strip can be formed at a great deal less expense than the detached hollow spheres, and, in order to obviate the second disadvantage above named, I have formed at one or at both ends of the spiral strip a ring, d, which, after the interfering-ring has been securedv in position, can he slipped over the buckle or fastening device, so as to conceal the same.

By this arrangement no portion of the strap is left exposed, and the effect of my interfering-ring is not impaired, even if the same should turn round on the leg of the horse.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. An interfering-ring for horses, composed of.a spiral strip, a, of india-rubber or other suitable material, and a strap, 1), extending through said spiral strip and provided with a suitable fastening device, 0, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination, with the spiral strip a, strap b, and fastening device 0, of a ring, d, (one or more,) for covering the fastening device after the interfering'ring has been socured in position, substantially as set forth.
