IMPROVEMENT IN CHILDRENS CARRIAGES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [85,555, dated December 19, 1576; application filed September 4, 187 6.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. LINDSAY, of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Childrens Carriages, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a childs carriage embracing my improvements, and Fig. 2 represents a vertical longitudinal section through the same.

Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures.

The improvement consists in providing the body of the carriage with one or more concealed drawers, arranged within the carriagebox, and below the elevated seat or flooring upon which the child rests, and adapted to be opened or drawn out at the end or back of the carriage, as hereinafter explained.

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the body of the carriage, which, together with the wheels upon which the carriage is supported and propelled, may be of any usual or preferred construction and arrangement, except in the particulars hereinafter specified.

The body A of the carriage is, by preference, provided with the usual flooring or bottom, and at a suitable distance above such flooring is a second flooring, a, which may either extend the whole length of the body of the carriage, or for a portion only of its length, from the rear toward the front, forming an elevated portion or seat, as preferred. The space thus formed under the flooring c is utilized by providing it with one or more small drawers or receptacles, B, access to which is had through an opening formed at A in the end or back of the carriage, as shown. The outer face or end b of the drawer or receptacle B is adapted, when in place, to fill the opening A, and to form, in appearance and finish, a part of the back itself, thus concealing the receptacle, and enabling the manufacturer to give to the back any usual or preferred form and style of finish.

The flooring underneath the drawer can, of

course, be dispensed with, the drawer being made to rest and slide in and out upon cleats, or in grooves at its sides, as shown.

The cover or upper flooringa may be hinged at its rear end, at c to the back, in such manner that when the support a at its forward end is removed or withdrawn, said flooring will assume an inclined position, adapting the child to be placed in a recumbent position thereon, and the forward support a may be hinged to the forward edge of the elevated flooring a, in such manner as to form an extension thereof when the latter is placed in the inclined position referred to, as indicated by the dotted lines, Fig. 2. Where this latter construction is adopted the drawer may be made tapering from the rear to its forward end, facilitating the placing of its covering or the elevated flooring in the inclined position described.

Other modifications may be made in the construction without departing from my invention, the purpose of which, as above stated, is to locate the drawer or receptacle within the body of the carriage, or underneath the flooring of the same, and in a concealed position, as explained.

Small knobs or other suitable devices may be applied to the part b, for facilitating access to the receptacle, and, if desired, it may be furnished with lock and key, or other suitable fastenings, for preventing accidental displacement.

I am aware that childrens carriages have been provided with receptacles for carrying small packages, extra garments, 850.; but so far as I am informed these receptacles have heretofore been placed outside of the carriagebody. These I do not claim; but

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

Achilds carriage provided with the concealed drawer (3, arranged underneath the elevated flooring a and within the body of the carriage, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
