TRIM non rnnr'nonnnns Application filed February 26', 1931; Serial No. 518,405; 7
, channeling by the elements and to facilitate v the cutting of the grass.
r A further object of the invention is to provide in a device of this kind novel means for securing the strip in place and for reinforcing it. The invention also includes certain other novel features of construction which will be more fully pointed out in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the best form of my device at present known to me Figure 1 is a plan view of my device laid along the margin of a paved walk;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of the sections of the strip;
Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; I
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary section taken on the line 14 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a portion of an alternate form of strip.
The body of the strip is preferably con structed from sheet material similar to that employed in the higher grades of prepared roofing, for example, thick, felt sheets impregnated and coated with bituminous waterproofing material. The main body of the strip is preferably laminated, being. formed from a top sheet 7 and a bottom sheet 8 secured together in overlapping relation to each other by a suitable asphaltic binder. One longitudinal edge of the sheet 7 projects to form a flange 9 to overlap the sidewalk or other pavement, as hereinafter described. A relatively rigid member 1010f sheet metal is secured between the sheets 7 and 8 and has a. flange 1 1 which normally projects downward to secure the device in place. Thestrip is preferably made in sections adapted 'to fit together, end to end, as indicatedin Fig. 1, and to insure smooth end joints the sheet 7 is allowed to project at one end of each strip andfthesheet, Sprojects at the other end; Thus the sheet 7 overlaps the sheet 8 at the end joints and the overlapping portions may be secured together by suitable waterproof adhesive. e
In Figs. 1 and 3, my improved strip is shown in place along the borders of turf 12 adjoining asidewalk 13, the flange 9 being placed in overlapping relation to the walk 13 and the main body of the strip overl ing the earth adjacent-to the walk. The ange 11' of the stiff member 10'is embedded in'the earth in abutment with the edge of the walk 13 so that accidental displacement of the strip is prevented. The sheets 7 and 8, being flexible, conform to any irregularities in the surface of theearth orturf adjacent to'the walk. Thus my devicelies flat and oflers no obstruction to pedestrians or to a lawn mower which may beused to cut the 'grass immediately adjacent the strip. Further, because ofithe thinflexible character of the flange 9, itconforms closely to the surface of the pavement and "prevents the usual erosion and channeling by the elements along the edges of the walk-.lf
In the alternate form of my device (shown in Fig. 5), 1' substitute spaced, metal fingers 14 for themember 10. These fingers 14 are; preferably constructed from metal of such nature and thickness that theymay be bent downward as indicated in dotted lines. One end of each of the strips 14 is secured between the sheets 7-and 8. To facilitate shipping. handling and installation,*th'e strips of this alternate .form ofthe" device may be furnished in relatively long sections and rolled in compact form with the fingers 14 straight, as in full lines in Fig. 5. When the strip is to be laid, the members 14 are bent downward to dotted line position and are inserted in the earth adjacent to the walk or pavement as in the case of the preferred form of the device. The sheets 7 may be provided with surfacing of any desired color and preferably have a coating of sand or granular slate or rock, of the type well known in the roofing art, to improve the wearing qualities. 7
Obviously, my device may be used along the edges of walks, driveways or other areas either with gravel, earth or paved surfaces, but it is particularly advantageous in preventing channeling at the edges of pavement.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is;
1. Trim for turf borders comprising, a stripof flexible sheet material adapted to lie on the surface of the turf and to conform thereto along the edge of a walk or the like and means depending from said strip along the edge of the walk for securing said strip in place.
2. Trim for turf borders comprising, a strip of flexible water-proof felt adapted to lie on the surface of the turf and to conform thereto along an edge of a walk or the like and a relatively stifl' fastening member secured to said strip and projecting downward therefrom to be inserted in the soil adjoining the Walk.
3. Trim for turf borders comprising, a plane, thin strip of flexible sheet material adapted to lie on the surface of the turf and to conform thereto along the edge of a walk or the like and having a plane, thin and flexible flange along a longitudinal edge adapted to overlap the Walk, and a relatively stifl' fastening member secured to said strip and projecting downward therefrom to be inserted in the soil for securing said strip in place.
4. Trim for turf borders comprising, a laminated strip of flexible sheet material adapted to lie on the surface of the turf having. a longitudinal flange of reduced thickness adapted to overlap a walk or the like and a fastening member projecting downward adjacent to said flange for insertion in the soil adjoining the walk.
5. Trim for turf borders comprising, a. laminated strip of flexible sheet material having a substantially horizontally extending flange of reduced thickness adapted to overlap va walk or the like and a relatively stifl fastening member having a portion secured between the laminations of said strip and another portion projecting downward adj acent to said flange for insertion in the soil adjoining the wal 6. Trim for turf borders comprising, a
substantially horizontally extending strip of flexible sheet material having a longitudinal flange adapted to overlap a walk or the like and a metal fastening member, angular in cross section, having a portion secured to said strip and another portion projecting downward along and adjacent to said flange for insertion in the soil adjoining the walk.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
' WARREN L. JARGHOW.
