ROPE-CLAMP.
Patented. AprilS, 1877.
No. 189,274..v
INVENTOR- WITNESSES ATTORNEYS;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. SMITH, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ROPE-CLAMPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent Ito-189.274, dated April 3, 1877 application filed March 7, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY T. SMITH, of Washington, in the county of Washington and in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Rope-Griping Device; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the I accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts of a device for clamping cords or ropes, as will be hereinafter more particularly described.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its constrnctionand operation.
In the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a plan view of the clamp, with the several parts secured together. Figs. 2 and 3 are detached views, and Fig. 4 a cross-section.
In the figures, A represents a metallic shell, in which is a hub, e. In the rim of this shell are out four slots or openings, m m, to receive the rope or cord to beheld.
a a represent an annular groove in the shell, between the hub and rim, which is the channel in which the cord is placed.
B represents a cup, the rim of which enters the groove a in the shell. This rim is serrated or notched, as seen at w m :0, Fig. 3. These serrations or lugs catch against the cord, and prevent it from slipping.
0 represents a thumb-screw, which passes through the center of the cup as also through the shell, and confines the two, together. Upon one end of the thumb-screw is a button, d, which prevents it fromv being removed from the two parts. This button is covered by a suitable cap, which protects it.
The cord, as seen in Fig.2, is passed through the shell lying in the groove 0. and around the hub e. The cap is then forced against the cord by means of the set-screw.
The serrated edges of the rim of the cup, when tightly pressed against the cord by means of the screw, keep it securely in place, and prevent it from slipping.
This device can be used with a single cord by placing a compensating piece of cord or other material upon the opposite side of the hub from the cord.
I expect to use this clamp for cords for closing mail-bags, principally, but may use it for any other purpose for which it will answer.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The shell A, with its hub e and groove a, in combination with the cup B, with its serrated rim, and the screw 0, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 28th day of February, 1877.
HENRY T. SMITH.
