Description

FAT-ENT .FE
JAMES J. VAN WIEOF I )UBUQUE, IWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF HIS RIGHTIO WILLIAMP. ALLEN, OF SAME PLAOE.
Sperification formng part of Letters Patent No.l92.22, at J 11116 1 1 77; applcaton filed April 30, 1877.
T0 all whom z't may concern Be ib known that I, JAMES JEROME VAN WIE, of Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of I0wa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in OhimneyTeps for preventing chimneys smoking; and I de hereby deelare that the following is a full, clear, and exact deseription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsforming part of this specific2ition, in whch- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the chixnney-top, and a portion of a chimney te which it is applied. Ig. 2 is a top view of the chimney-top. Fig. 3 is an inverted view of the impr0ved chimney-tep. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section of the chiznney-top looking upward.
'lhe nature of my invention consists, first, in a chimney-top in which is 'orlned a eentral hooded draft-passage in cemmunication with the flue of the chimney and the atmosphere, and hooded side passages Whieh are in eommunieation with the atmesphere and chimney-flue, the said central passage and the side passages be1ng open to the influence of both upward and downward. currents of wind in such a manner that an updraft is produced in the chimney-flue by b0th, without any liability of these currents passing down into the chimney-flue, or of rain beating nto Ib consists, seconrl, ia,apeculiar constructi0n Of the cap Wh ere y it is capable of fit ting down over the top of the chimney proper, and when in position will be kepi. from de scending by sheulders produced within the jacket of the ehimney-top by the fermation of the centra] and side passages.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the jacket er case of the chimrey-top, consisting wrought; upon its exterior. Within this jacket; an inuer central drafhpassage, G, and outer side passages, G G, are constructed, by means of partitions a a. a 0, of a slightly cnrved form, which are carried upward and nward from the bottom ofthe side openings F to a point smne distance above the top of the said side openigs. These partitions are united together at the corners b y vertical angular corner-pieces b b b b, as shown. 'lhe said corner-piecesare of a less height than the jacket A,and are piacedi s0 as to terminate some distance frou1 both the bottom of the case and the top of the central fine. These corner-pieces are fastened to the inside of the jacket, and form resting-shonlders c 0 00 for the chimney-top when it is applied upon a ehmney, as shown in Fig. 1. H is a tapering hoed arranged wibhin the enter jacket and above the centra] passage G upon narrow supports 01 d. This hoed is el0sed at t0p and entirely oevers the centrail passage, but it; is placed high enough above said passage, upon the brackets d 01, to form a lateral passage, f, en a1l sides between it and .the upper ends of the plates ferming the central passage. This lateral passage eonnnunicates with the side passages 0r openings, and also with the top passage 0r opening E of the cuter jacket A.
The ehimney-eap described, being placed en the chimney, will be held against lateral movementrby the skirting porton A and kept; fro m downward movement by the shoulders c 0 c 0. The smoke passes up the central flue and ut; at openingsfE. 'lhe wind, blowirig against the side 01 end of the section A of the cap, enters openings F, and passes up bhe air passages G G and creates a drafb, as illus trated by the arrovs 1. The wind blowing down at any angle strikes the hoed H,and passes down the side er end airpassages G G, as indicatedby the arrows 2. By the beveled surfaces of the upper part of the jacket and hoed the currents are directd and facilitated through theopenings E and F F.
In the construetion of my chixnney-top I have preserved the general oubline of a chim ney, and in this respect it will be fbund su perior to many devices heretofore used 'or preventing chimneys smoking; as t; does not mar the beauty and finish of the chimney. Besides this the draftpassages themselves g"e an ornamental appearance.
Having deseribed my nvention, what I claim as new, and desre te secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The passages F G, the shoulders 0, and the passage G, formed by plates a and I applied te the case A A, which isn form like the ehimney 0, in the manner and fox the purpose described..
2. The chimney-cap having a passage, E, through its top, oblque passages F G' in its sides, a central vertcal passage, Gr, a flarin g 01 beveled hoed, H, above the upper edge of the wals of the central passage, and a Iatera passage, f, between theb'ase of the hoed and the said walls of the central passage G, substantially as and for the purpose deserbed.
3. The chimney-cap A, havn g a passage, E, in its top, oblque passages F G in its sides, a verteal central passage, Gr, a flarng 01 beveled hoed, H, and a lateral passage, f, shoul" ders c, extenson A, and beveled surface D, substantially as and for the purpose deseribed. W'itness my hand, in the matter of my application for a patent for a ehimney-top, ths 24th day of April, A. D. 1877.
