UNITED STATES FRANK S. BISSELL, OF PITTSBURG, PEHNSYLVANIA.
lMPROVEMENTlN SUMMER FRONTS FOR FIRE-PLACE GRATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,473, dated July 24, 1877 application filed May 29, 1877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK S. BIssELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Summer Fronts for Open Fire-Place Grates and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved summer front in conjunction with a Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of of the devices.
Like letters refer to like parts wherever they occur.
My invention relates to the construction of summer fronts for open fire-place grates, &c., and consists in combining with a shutter for closing the ash-pit, and which may be employed at all times with the basket, if desired, a front or shutter for closing the combustionchamber and inclosing the grate, which latter can be applied when the grate is not in use, and without the removal or displacement of the basket, whereby the opening of the grate-frame is closed, and the grate at the same time remains ready for immediate use.
Heretofore summer fronts for open fireplace grates have been formed in a single piece, which, when applied to the closing of frames having projecting grates, necessitated the removal of the basket or the displacement of the basket by turning it upon pivots (especially provided for the purpose,) and when applied to receding grates required the removal of some portion of the grate-fittings, in either case leaving the grate unprepared for immediate use when required.
1 will now proceed to describe my invention, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.
In the drawing, A indicates the frame surrounding the fire-place; B, the combustionchamber, and O the basket, the latter being, in the present instance, an agitating-grate with a basket-front, O.
D represents an ash screen or shutter, adapted to close the ash-pit, and extending from the basket to the hearth. It is formed either with or without a flange or guard-plate, d, according to the basket with which it is employed, but preferably is supplied with said flange or equivalent means, upon which the lower edge of the upper shutter or summer front may rest securely, and, when employed, the flange 01 may be formed to wedge with the frame and support shutter D, though other means of support may be provided.
E indicates the shutter for closing the combustion-chamber or the opening in frame A, and inclosing the basket 0 c. This shutter or summer front is preferably slightly larger than the opening in frame A, so as to lap within the same, as indicated by the dotted line, Fig. 1, and rests or is supported by its lower edge on the shutter or ash-screen D. The lap of the shutter E will retain it in position, but other means may be employed therefor. If preferred, it may be hung upon the basket by hooks, as indicated by dotted lines, Fig. 2, or the lower edge of the shutter E may be made to rest upon the basket or the basketframe, the method of securing the upper shutter or summer front being immaterial.
Either or both of the pieces D and E may be shaped or ornamented to accord with the design of mantel, frame, grate, or fittings, as desired.
The advantages of my improved summer front are that it can be applied without disturbing the basket or fittings forms a finish with the frame and ash-screen, which are parts of the grate in ordinary use; and is readily removed, leaving the grate ready for immediate use when required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patout is- Iii combination with the ash-screen or shutter of an open fireplace grate, the detachable shutter, adapted, substantially as described, to close the combustion-chamber or space above the ash-screen, so as to form therewith the summer front.
In testimony whereof I, the said FRANK S. BIssELL, have hereunto set my hand.
FRANK S. BI SSELL.
